Title: please help me, I am stumped and without a bike..
Post by: NJ Monster on June 22, 2010, 10:27:14 AM
I recently bought a 2002 monster 750ie off my friend for a pretty good deal. It needed a few things such as lighting, a fuel tank, and a new seat.
Lastnight after a month of waiting for all the parts I put her all together and started her up....

I took her for a ride down the street and realized the bike was breaking up at upper rpms, bad enough where I cannot ride it. We went over a bunch
of things and we are stumped. When my friend bought it off the previous owner it was flawless, but then developed some rust in the gas tank
which needed to be replaced along with the fuel pump...which both are now replaced ... brand new!

The plugs were just replaced.

Can anyone help me?

Have you visited the Carbs recently?  Also might need to replace the fuel filter.

A 750ie would be one with fuel injection.

I agree about the fuel filter, though.  If the old fuel filter is still in there it is almost guaranteed to be clogged.  You'll know for sure when you take it out.  You'll get gunk coming back out of the inlet if it's clogged.

Yup, esp if the previous tank had a rust issue-replace the fuel filter.

the tank and fuel pump came with brand new everything, so the filter is brand new ... i even took everything apart to check her out before i put gas in her.

Any other ideas?

Injectors?

Upper RPMs?  Number please.  I've seen people complain about a stutter at high RPM not realizing that the rev limiter kicks in at around 9000-10,000.

Injectors?

Maybe, but that is an expensive maybe.  First I would rule everything else out, and it seems you have done a pretty good job of that.  I would re check all your fuel hoses and venting, even though it doesn't seem like a venting problem.  Did you replace those hoses?  If so, did you use SAE 30R10 hose?  Fuel pressure needs to be checked too.  If all else checks out, then you would need to check the injector spray pattern, which requires removing the injectors, getting the fuel pump going and observing.  Since you are talking about a huge volume of atomized fuel under high pressure, a job best left to the professionals.

ya, that is an expensive maybe but i thought the same thing.  How would i check venting and fuel pressure?

its breaking up around 6k and falling flat on its face. i want to try everything before i have to bring her to the dealer and spend money.

thanks

Venting is easy, is there vacuum when you open the fuel filler cap?   Fuel pressure? not so easy.  Well, not so hard, but you need a fuel pressure gauge capable of handling pressure of more than 45 PSI, not a tool in most of our boxes.

Your problem is most likely either a fuel shortage or an ignition miss.  Have you looked at the spark plugs again?  A good photo could be helpful.

I am doing the plugs again this weekend. If that doesn't work then I am going to bring her to ducati  :( I just hope its not expensive, I bought the bike because I got a great deal on her, and its a 02 with less than 3k miles!!!

I just got my permit and cant wait to get on the road finally!

I'll check for venting tomorrow I have plenty of mechanic frinds (cars) so I am sure I can find almost any tool out there unless it is motorcycle specific .. but if its not ... how could I check the fuel pressure??? When my friend bought the bike it ran flawless, then it sat for a few weeks and developed rust in the fuel tank (was already there he just didn't know about it) thats when the problems started. The bike was wrecked, so thats why there was rust in the tank because it got damaged in the accident. He got a great deal on a 2009 left over liter bike and hopped on it so she was sitting in his garage rotting away until I decided to give her life again. Hopefully I will be on the road soon!

You would have to tee the pressure tester between the line before the pressure regulator and return line to the tank for pump pressure and after the pressure regulator to the return line for regulated pressure.

If you live anywhere near Middletown, NY I suggest taking the bike to these folks:
