Title: Is it bad to ride with a backfire through the intake?
Post by: el_loco on June 24, 2010, 09:28:09 PM
I can't imagine it's ideal, but should I park the bike until it's corrected?  It only happens around 4,000 RPM after the motor is warm.  Well actually I can feel a slight "bump" in the smoothness while accelerating up through the 4k mark sometimes even when the motor is cold, but once it warms up I get an intermittent fluff right around the 4k mark.  I understand it's likely due to a lean condition.  The weather is so nice i REALLY want to ride but not sure I should?

And your bike is...  Open air box?  Exhaust, etc?  Then maybe we could come up with a temporary fix.

it is probally a little lean in the 4000 range. if you have a PC you can bump the numbers a little, if you have an open airbox you could put the lid back on, etc.....we need to know the bike, mods etc..... [thumbsup]

Right, I wrote this late at night so I only had half my brain.

Bike's a 2002 Monster 750 i.e.  Stock except the P.O. put a K&N filter.  The exhaust are Remus, but they just say "Ducati Performance" along the side and "Remus" at the end where the tip is so I believe they were the stock option.  Could a K&N lean it out enough to cause these symptoms?

Thanks guys

The exhaust is aftermarket...Remus was DP before Termi.  Your bike is probally lean, it needs a power commander or other tuning option.  It is around 300-400 and you can get away with a canned map. (usally comes with a PC if you get it from Fast by Ferracci, or another dealer who knows Ducati...check the sponsor board.  A custom tune will be another 300ish, but will be for your exact bike.  by the way Remus are very nice pipes!!!

keep in mind your bike may not be lean enough to hurt it, it is just not getting the right amount of fuel.

So no potential damage, just akward to ride?

Good to know about the pipes, that explains why it's running lean.  I'll have it in to Cheshire as soon as I can, but I'll ride it on the nice days until then!

If its real lean it can hurt, you really need to get it on a dyno and see the air fuel ratio.

If you are not running an open air box a simple CO trim adjustment at your dealer or an independent shop with a proper diagnostic tool should fix you up.

Sweet, I hope it's as simple as that!
