last night I put on some new bars and when I went to start the bike this morning for a test ride, the fast idle lever won't stay in position. That is, it snaps back to the stops.
I opened up the switch and didn't see anything amiss, but I'll admit I didn't take a mental picture of the inside last night before I ground off the locating pin.
I thought maybe something fell out but I don't see anything obviously missing. I did find a small spring on the floor of the garage but it doesn't look like it goes anywhere.
any ideas?

there is a small white plastic piece that the fast idle sits on, the spring goes under that.
its your cable routing ...happened to me as well
take a good look at the cable as it goes near the speedo ..thats where it binds just fiddle with it to get it correct
remove the cluster ..just unbolt no need to unplug

this was it exactly. I couldn't find an exploded diagram of the switch, so good that I held onto that spring.

i just installed all my controls on the woodcraft clipons yesterday so i knew exactly what you were seeing. great timing. another thing i noticed was the dash control button rubbed against the bar now causing the switch to hang up and not slide back and forth. you might want to check that. i had to shave the white part of that switch with a dremel enough so it wouldn't touch the bar.

sorry, but dash control button? My dash has the two rubber-ish buttons in the middle and don't come close to the bars. am I missing something else?
