I'm sitting here at home and the young man who bought my old 695 texts me saying the bike is leaking oil. The thing was almost dry, and when I asked where the leak was he wrote back "It looks like it's coming from a hose right behind the engine by the brake fluid reserve."
:-\
He said the bike was almost dry, and for the life of me, I can't find my old schematics of the engine. Any thoughts about this? I don't remember any hoses that can hold engine oil. I'm thinking a gasket blew and oil is spewing onto something.
I wrote it's kind of urgent because he's been texting me from the road, and there's a risk of storms in Philly tonight.
However... I did say to him that all things considered, I was make the beast with two backsing delighted to hear he was out riding the bike! [thumbsup]
thats the crankcase breather. and how does he know its almost dry? is he looking at the window sight with the bike on the sidestand?

It's only been a few text messages. I'm assuming that's how he's guessing the oil level. Thanks for the heads-up on the breather. I've been deep in the CBR shop manual lately - have been forgetting my Monster stuff.

Other than that...
How the hell you been? ;D
thanks for the thread Tommy, as He Man confirmed, it is definitely a crankcase breather problem. Instead of buying a new one for $100+ i've read that sealing it with silicon works just fine. Either way I am taking it in to my local shop to have them take a look, and get a professional opinion. The bike, however, is a friggin mess... "sludge" everywhere, but i don't want to clean it yet so they can see where exactly the leak is coming from. Once again, thanks for the thread, and I'll post the outcome in a couple days.

I look forward to hearing what's up. Sorry to hear the bike is a bit sloppy because of the leak.
As I mentioned in my text to you - I'm make the beast with two backsing delighted to hear you're enjoying the bike! [thumbsup]
could always switch to a KN type breather, if youre into that sort of thing.
i havent had any problems with mine. and a nice power wash cleaned up all the sludge from
the previous owner nicely [thumbsup] enjoy the 695!
If it's leaking oil out the crankcase breather, a K&N filter won't help. It's either the breather valve (the bit under the hose/filter) that's stuck open, or else it's got too much oil in it, or else you're doing too many wheelies.
One quick question. How are you measuring the oil level? It should look totally empty when it's on the side stand, and in the middle of the sight glass when the bike is level and warm. If it's in the middle of the sight glass when the bike is on the stand, it's badly overfilled, and will spew out the breather.

Actually the Ducati breathers have leaked for quite some time with no provocation. There have been several iterations some better than others.
Many people just clean them up and use some silicone sealer at the joints.
Others use aftermarket breathers...
and then you have the owner like me that washes it off once a year. ;)

Having a similar problem with a new m1100 I bought. It looks like they overfilled the crankcase and oil comes out the crankcase breather while I am riding and on the ground when I let it sit. When I hit the 600 miles service they confirmed it is coming from overflow hose. They changed the oil and obviously made sure the level was correct. The problem is that after I rode it for a couple hundred miles last night it is still coming out the overflow hose. Does it take several cycles to clear this the crankcase breather out after an overfill? Thanks.
Figures this one out. Had to replace the Crank Case Breather Valve. Tank removal but relatively painless. Took forever to get the part. Ducati had to cannibalize a showroom bike finally after it was not available for 6 weeks and got tired of hearing my voice at customer service.
