Title: Hello Neighbor
Post by: BWClark on June 04, 2008, 04:23:40 PM
Hello Neighbors,

I really wanted to share my hero Mr. Rogers with you all.

As many of you may know, Mr Rogers was a children's television presenter on public television for over 30 years. His show, "Mr Rogers Neighborhood" was his concept, and he wrote all the music. He was trained as a composer, but was struck by TV when it first appeared with its potential for child education, which he was also passionate about.

I've attached 3 of my favorite youtube links. Have kleenex handy...   :'(   ;D

Mr rogers taught me how to tie my shoes.  A great man, who really had the right idea of how a kids TV show should be.

I could never stand the show as a kid, I somehow found him patronizing. :-\

QuoteI could never stand the show as a kid, I somehow found him patronizing. Undecided

=(

It was prob his tone of voice but thats how he always talks off and on TV. I think he was a good man who actually made a difference.

Now all we have today is reality TV shows and cartoons blowing each other up  ???

Yeah, well that's why I don't have cable.

I mostly grew up on Sesame Street, 3-2-1 Contact, and old BBC shows.

I know exactly what you're talking about. I think I watched him until I learned how to change the channel. But I know I watched him for a time.

It's only in retrospect that I realize that he made a difference to me. I grew up with him always there on the channel I wasn't always watching. I think he cared so genuinely and unconditionally that I still feel it. I'm always welcome in his neighborhood, and there aren't many places in the world where we're always welcome. I really appreciate it.   :)

From all the accounts that I've seen, from people who have known and met him, he was an incredibly kind, generous, and genuine man. When he died, I read so many stories of people who had run into him in random places, and he would always take time out of whatever he was doing to talk to them, and that the kindness he presented on his show wasn't an act in the least.

I can see not everyone jiving with his style, necessarily, but it's tough to argue with his message. He's one of the few "celebrities" I would have liked to have met, and I was sad when he died.

Thanks for posting those videos. I hadn't seen the Emmy speech.

Mr. Rogers was truly ahead of his time when it came to children's TV programing. He is indeed an icon. Who knows how many countless generations he helped shaped. God bless Mr. R!  [thumbsup]

On a lighter note. I think he rode one of them new 696  :)   Don't believe me? Check it out...

that's not what i've heard or seen.

my sister-in-law has photos of when she ran into him in DC -- she said he was a sweet man and was happy to chat with her for a minute when she stopped him on the street -- and left her with a hug and "give your kids a hug for me".

a product of 'the church' (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Fred_Rogers).  yes he preached. yes he taught morals, values, politeness, the importance of taking one's shoes off and wearing sweaters- all that stuff.  just as with the church some people do and some people don't get along with his approach. as a kid I liked him but was lured away by flashier shows like Sesame Street, the Electric Company and Bugs Bunny.  Besides- Lady Elaine Fairchilde scared the shit out of me.

Yeah man, that land of make believe had some scary shit.

Check this for some trippy shit... I'm sure Fred would be encouraging and find it interesting.   [thumbsup]

I liked hearing Fred's messages throughout. These are good lessons for kids that people don't really address. "You can never go down the drain".

"everybody does some bad things, you know"

"someday, I said, I'm really going to marry my mom"

That was a trippy video...Kembrew Mcleod's makes Mr Rogers seem like a psychopath!

Holy carp!!!  From here on out I vow to pre-screen what my kids watch!  I knew he was like Ward Cleaver but I had no idea it was more like Cleaver Ward!  [laugh]

Fred- you still rock the cardigan.  See you in wherever.  "Existence is but an illusion...."

I've heard from numerous people that he was a marine before doing his t.v. show but the wiki article doesn't say anything about it. I'm not a wiki-worshiper by any means, but i would have thought if it was true it would have made it into the article. Anyone know anything about Mr. Rogers being a marine?

It's a common rumor. Not true.

When I was a kid, I always thought he was creepy.  It beats some of the ADHD-inducing stuff on tv now, I must admit.

I remember watching every weekend waiting to be seen in that magic mirror.

His voice brings back mamories of pb&J, with a coke and patato chips for lunch while watching tv.

But man I think all the sweaters, highwaters and deck shoes he wore made me rebel in the clothes that I wore as I grew up
