Title: Just paying for a name..... Post by: matmcd78 on July 03, 2010, 06:57:33 PM My job as a glorified taxi driver affords me the opportunity to meet all sorts of interesting people. Tonight it was a fellow biker (NOT Ducati) who was unfortunately (maybe not) ran off the road by an unwitnessed drunk driver (read- doesn't handle stressful driving situations well) and thought he needed an ambulance for his obviously not injured self. While transporting him to the closest medical facility, I offered some small talk to pass the time as his very stable condition gave me nothing to do. I inquired about his motorcycle, a really neat looking Honda Shadow with custom painted tank and cartoonishly large breather. It was his second bike in some many months. The first a victim of yet another drunk driver. Talk about bad luck. I talked about my own M696 and how it was the best bike I have every owned. He promptly replied, "Ducati? Just paying a lot of money for a name. Not even decent. Would rather ride a Harley and I hate Harley's.". I was shocked into silence, but then I realized....Maybe he has some sort of brain injury. I quickly reevaluated his mental status. He knew his name, birthdate, current date and the who the president is. I rethought his statement and I couldn't control my laughter. Very unprofessional, I know. I am glad he thinks so poorly of Ducati. He will never purchase one only to destroy it with the excuse of an unseen drunk driver. Just thought I would share a little of my day. Thanks for reading. (Did I mention he had a custom painted Shadow?)

Love your reaction.I tend to get similar respond from my friends with bikes. One guy just wants to talk about how powerful his bike is and that he got it up to 125 the other day. Whenever he starts on that, I just reply "yes, Erick. I know. Your GSX650F is one badass bike [bow_down]" Title: Re: Just paying for a name..... Title: Re: Just paying for a name..... Post by: psycledelic on July 04, 2010, 02:57:04 AM Harley is the Ducati of the cruiser world (bigger price, more maint., more noise, more for accessories, etc.). He just hates what he can't afford. I think it is called jealousy.
My dad is a Honda Shadow man. I prefer his reasoning. "Why spend the extra. It goes point A to point B just as fast, but I have more cash in my wallet!" So....he buys lunch. I mean, he is my dad, and.....I do like to eat. Title: Re: Just paying for a name..... Post by: the_Journeyman on July 04, 2010, 04:19:19 AM It's funny. I I've got two air-cooled Ducatis. Down on power and often heavier than similar displacement other brands. I hear everything from desire, fascination, envy, expensive, high-maintenance etc. Two things stand out for me on every ride. I'm never the fastest, and I'm never the slowest. My bikes have a distinctive sound and a soul. Sure they can be expensive, but careful shopping netted me both for under $8000 TOGETHER. and the maintenance thing? I do it myself, and if valves are in spec, we're talking maybe an hour to check. Belts aren't hard either, not terribly expensive. If that 17-year old wants to think my M750 will to 200PMPH, let em. If someone wants to take a ride o n these twisty roads because there's no way my 80HP 900 will keep up with their 120HP 600, I'm game. Either way, I have a lot of fun and good conversations because of my bikes ~

The way it comes off is like "your dumb for wasting your money on that shit". rude ... considering your bike just got hit and your taking a loud cab to the hospital. Title: Re: Just paying for a name..... Post by: IdZer0 on July 04, 2010, 08:42:09 AM I just like the fact he doesn't like Ducatis for those reasons and then goes on he'd rather have Harley. [laugh] Makes you wonder what the odds are for good sales of the rumored Mega-Monster.

As to bobspapa's political reference, I'm not sure what that has to do with anything. Title: Re: Just paying for a name..... Post by: Privateer on July 05, 2010, 01:09:42 PM whenever I hear similar, and I have from non-potential-head-injury people, i ask them how many WSBK championships their marquee has won.
If they can't answer, I tell them, and then I tell them to shut their pie holes. Title: Re: Just paying for a name..... Post by: Greg on July 05, 2010, 01:33:41 PM You should have jump started hs brain by putting the paddles on either side of his head [evil]

Humor, wit refer to an ability to perceive and express a sense of the clever or amusing. Humor consists principally in the recognition and expression of incongruities or peculiarities present in a situation or character. It is frequently used to illustrate some fundamental absurdity in human nature or conduct, and is generally thought of as more kindly than wit: a genial and mellow type of humor; his biting wit. Wit is a purely intellectual manifestation of cleverness and quickness of apprehension in discovering analogies between things really unlike, and expressing them in brief, diverting, and often sharp observations or remarks. 9. fancy, vagary. 12. Humor, gratify, indulge imply attempting to satisfy the wishes or whims of (oneself or others). To humor is to comply with a mood, fancy, or caprice, as in order to satisfy, soothe, or manage: to humor an invalid. To gratify is to please by satisfying the likings or desires: to gratify someone by praising him. Indulge suggests a yielding to wishes that perhaps should not be given in to: to indulge an unreasonable demand; to indulge an irresponsible son. ya see.... the op mentioned asking the person if he knew who the current POTUS was..... soooo I thought it would be funny if I expanded on it.... apparently only I thought it was funny. Post by: DoubleEagle on July 05, 2010, 07:28:00 PM If the guy just got dusted off his bike and hit his noggin he's likely to spew any number of vile words about bikes he doesn't like or know a shit about.
Pay him no mind . He's like so many in this world that don't know shit but can blow a lot of it. Dolph Title: Re: Just paying for a name..... Post by: ChrisH on July 06, 2010, 11:21:08 AM If you're just paying for a name in that guys opinion he should be driving a tata car, wearing no name walmart clothes, and always eating the cheapest store brand foods because anything nicer would just be paying for a name too.
Most people reach a point in their lives where they feel like spending a certain amount for better quality items that will last longer, provide more long term value, and make them happy. No need to be bothered by him, he's just not intelligent enough to consciously understand that everyones perceived value, and vision of of meeting a need is different. |
