Title: Small amount of oil coming from OEM Oil Plug
Post by: cakeman on July 07, 2010, 09:12:43 PM
Hi, i am noticing a little bit of oil gradually over time coming out from the OEM black plastick oil plug around the sides where it screws in. I recall a friend of mine a while ago saying the OEM oil screws/plugs werent the best. Can anyone confirm/deny if this is the case and if i should invest in an after market plug?

Cheers

Aftermarket plugs are cool for the bling factor and there are some really nice ones out there so just browse around a bit. If, on the other hand, you decide to stick with the OEM plug it's probably just the O-ring. Check that for any damage. Even if there doesn't appear to be you can replace it anyway for a couple bucks, might help with the leak.

My $.02

I had the same problem with my Sport Classic.

If you look closely at the plug, there's a "seam" where the sides of the casting mold met. In my case, that ridge was squeezing the gasket just enough to let a wee little bit of oil seep by. If that's what's causing it on yours, you could try *gently* filing down that ridge and replacing the gasket.

Or you could just drop the $20 on some new bling. The STM plugs are even pre-drilled for safety wire.  [thumbsup]

safety wire might slow down your punk factor too

I've had the "plug with a gauge" on my bike for about 8 years now and live in a city full of punks.  No problems yet (knocking wood).

Monsterparts lost their supplier/importer...they are still made and available in Eur but the supplier will not export to USA at link below...you would want a Number 5 version

I guess so judging from the website on line ordering option...unless you can get someone in Eur or Ireland to receive it and ship it to you...who knows...but that would be the type you would want example-wise
