Title: what rear tire to get.
Post by: tristantumble on July 13, 2010, 12:22:16 PM
looks like i might have to get a new rear tire for my m695 due to a large rock being lodged in it. Currently i still have the stock tires the bike came with, but would like to improve it if i do have to change. What tire should i get? Also Can i put a fatter rear tire on the stock rim?

Thanks!

You just opened a whole can of worms. First, you need to decide what kind of riding you do.( track, twisties, long trips etc.) There's a tire for every need. then, there's all the different makers.  When I bought my last tire ( only needed the rear), I was somewhat limited to stick with the stock line / same as the front. So, I went with the Bridgestone BT016. The stock was BT014. Definately a better tire, much more confident. However, the next event will be to replace both. And as of right now, I dont have a clue what to get. I suggest hitting the parts web sites. I believe that they have ratings to help narrow the search.

well, i'd definitely only want to get the rear, so i'd like to get something that would work well with the stock front. I do pretty much all city commuting on my bike. I like the way fatter tires look on the rear, so if i could i'd like to get something fatter then stock.

thanks again. tt.

Bridgestone BT003RS gets my vote. Good for twisties, but will "flat out" with too much highway ridin

Well, do you want to replace the front as well? If not, then get the same tire as your damaged one. If you're willing to replace both... then there's a lot more to talk about. Scduc makes good point about asking what sort of tire you need. So figure out what sort of rider you are and that;ll help you focus.

Can you put a fatter tire on... yeah you could sorta. Should you? No you really should not. A wider tire won't do anything good but look wider. It's heavier, that will reduce performance. It will have a different cross section profile witch will effect handling.

Pirelli Diablo Strada FTW!

I just bought my second one.  I've never heard one complaint about them.  Great for more mileage and great grip in the twistied and in the rain.  www.bikebandit.com (//http://) has them on sale right now too.

I also like the Pirelli Diablo Strada.  When I wore my last one out I replaced it with the Pirelli Angel ST, which is pretty much the same tire, but looks "more interesting" when new.

Either should work well with whatever stock tire you have on the front.

(BikeBandit.com only has a 180 rear Strada, which isn't going to fit on a 695).
