Title: Magicjack? Anyone have experience with this service?
Post by: rgramjet on July 15, 2010, 10:28:42 AM
Im sitting here looking at a $1,400 phone bill for my office lines.  Seems that a number I cancelled through Verizon was not cancelled, was billed online billed to an email that I no longer use.  Been on hold with Verizon for an hour now.

Ive heard a lot of good things about Magic Jack and am very interested.

Thanks in advance!

I haven't used it, but I use my Skype account for just about everything.  Costs me around $55/year for unlimited calls to the US and Canada (I didn't even know they had phones!) and a phone number.  Additional numbers are around $30/year IIRC.

No experience with MJ but I have been pleased with Vonage. I dumped AT&T as soon as I was able to get DSL. You can go online and configure your service. call forwarding, the number of rings before it goes to message etc.. One of the cool things is that if voicemail picks up it will send you a text version to your email with a Wav file attachment if you want to hear it.

I used magicjack for a bit its ok if you have a great internet connection, but its still sketchy at best especially for a business.. I now use www.ringcentral.com (//http://) and its much better and cheap... Again RingCentral works good but there are better services out there but cost more...

What do like about ring central as opposed to M.J?

I have MajicJack and it works fine for personal use where I am at.  It is a USB dongle that connects to PC or Mac USB port into which a standard phone (RJ11) is then connected to and runs directly on the computer using the MagicJack software.  MajicJack averages about $30/year after purchase of equipment ($30 jack + cost of chosen standard phone)

I used to use Packet8 (think they are now called 8x8) and they have packages setup specifically for business use.  Their VOIP phones connect directly to your Ethernet cable (RJ45) and a computer interface is not needed.  As a matter of fact, your computer can be connected to the back of the phone to have access to the internet.  Unlimited long distance including overseas cost about $35/month IIRC.  They had a special when I signed on and I got a VOIP phone for about $70.

For either system you will have to have Internet access and it is not included in the package.  They simply provide phone service via the internet you already have.

One cool thing about the MagicJack is I can carry it along with me in my backpack and if I am anywhere in the world where there is WiFi available I can plug it into my laptop and make a call home.

Ring central is a virtual PBX ( Private Branch Exchange) Office phone system basicaly,  So for 40 or so a month you get unlimited calling anywhere in North America, you get a local lan line that runs off your internet simular to Magic jack and you dont need a computer running to use it... You get a 1-800-### #### that you can receive calls on and call out on free, you get a 1-800-Fax number which you can fax out on and receive faxes from your computer directly, much easier than a fax machine, Faxes come directly to your email or to a fax machine if you wish, and you can call out from the 800 number, there is an answering service included so people can call your 800# and its just like a big business, you can go threw the menu of extensions to call or people to talk to,, and the beauty is each extension you have can ring anywhere you like,, so extension 101 - your line will ring to your cell if your out of the office, if your in the office you can direct it to your lan line that they provide you with, its pretty neat stuff...

and it goes on and on. but in general you can do 100 more things with this expeically if you are in business for your self...

I have and soon to be had TDS Telecom.  They do not know the meaning of customer appreciation.  The tech guys and gals were good to work with but the company clearly doesn't want my business.  And they're business rates are outrageous!   On a regular basis I would get a cancellation for nonpayment notice before getting the invoice.  The notice was dated a few days before the invoice.  I gave up getting it corrected.  That's just a small sample, the list goes on.

Comcast came buy the other day (a real person came to my office) and offered me $39.99 unlimited local and long distance per line and $29.99 for fax lines.  Save $10 on our internet lines.  We're switching Comcast at the office and at home.
