Title: Track Bike...?
Post by: The Bacon Junkie on July 15, 2010, 05:25:13 PM
Anybody got one for sale, or know of anybody who does?

I'm looking for a runner, inexpensive (under $2,000) doesn't really matter what brand, as long as it's not some knock-off piece of shit.  I was actually even thinking about a later model Ninja 250 that has the 17 inch wheels. A coupla friends went as far as to suggest a YSR50 or NSR50...

Just something I can go to the track and have a blast on.  The monster was so much fun, but it's my only bike and I don't want to wad it up or throw it down.

If ya know/hear of anything, I'd appreciate hearing about it.

Thanks!   [beer]

one of my really good buds is selling his 600rr...  terrific bike, i've done a trackday with him, might be a bit out of your price range, but here's the link anyway...    i do assure you it'd be a fantastic ride, well-maintained and loved and a DAMN good price for what it is...   http://www.socalmoto.org/forum/showthread.php?t=9806 (http://www.socalmoto.org/forum/showthread.php?t=9806)  (we are allowed to post links to other forums, i hope...)

Thanks Embyr...  [thumbsup]
It's a good looking bike for a good price, but, it is just a bit out of my price range right now.  I'm trying to justify the spending of money on a track bike as saving money on tickets and the coinciding rise in insurance rates.   ;)

Thanks Brotha!  I knew there had to be a super-secret place where track bikes went to be sold!    [beer]  I'll have to check it out.   [bacon]

Thanks for all the tips you guys!  (and Embyr)   [thumbsup]

Now I'm going to be like a little kid in his favorite toy store before Christmas.  ;)

Is having way too many choices a bad thing?  8)

There's been a lot of bikes that's I've been interested in, but none have seemed quite right.  :-\

One, however, made me sit up and take notice.  It's on a 749D in New Mexico.  The price is a bit high, but if he comes down a few hundred clams, or if it's not sold in a month or two when I have a little more cash, I think it will be in my garage.

Thanks to everyone who has contributed their tips and links.  They've been invaluable to me.  [thumbsup]

Since it's still not a done deal, keep your ears open.  Thanks!   [moto]

are you dead set on a ducati as a track bike?  or a twin?

I'm not dead set on either, but I heard of a 749 possibly for sale for only $2,500.  There's relatively minor issues, but it's rideable.  Apparently the guy just wants out of it?  If I can get him to come down a few hundred $$$, I think it would be ideal, but I'm open to anything, really.

I've had more than one friend tell me I'm riding pretty
much at the limit of my frame and suspension on my '99 M750 and it would be a lot safer to upgrade to a more superbike-ish ride.

no doubt.. i only asked b/c tracking a ducati can be an expensive proposition.  or at least more unnecessarily expensive than it needs to be.  parts for japanese bikes are everywhere.  parts for a ducati, not so much.. pay a lot more and usually you wait around for them.  you could spend that much on a completely tracked sv650 or I4 and then spend LOTS less keeping it going.

someone is bound to argue these points, and yes, you can easily track a ducati.  i'm just saying that, in general, any japanese bike is going to be easier to source parts for and a hell of a lot cheaper to crash.

I was actually leaning more towards a Japanese bike, be it a twin or I-4, for exactly the reasons you mentioned, but when the 749 came into the picture, I kinda got distracted by Ducati desmo goodness.

I haven't heard back about it, so I'm still searching for the right bike for me.   [moto]

...besides, the 749 was really heavy

That's the trouble with the small SBK's, really it's only the crank, cylinders, pistons, heads that are different, at the most.
So it'd be just a teeny bit lighter than a 999.

If you're tracking it, mileage isn't going to be too big an issue.
You're using it much harder than on the street, which is a bit rough.
WTF, just called you...

Here it is, Ladies and Gents!

Took it to the track for the first time today, but after the first session, it developed some carb issues.   [bang]  Borrowed a friend's bike for the last session...

ME vvv  Trying to stay with the fast guys...  (not doing a very good job)  [laugh]

It only looks fast...  ;)

Hey Ryan how come you look so big on that bike?    ;)

Maybe we'll get to do some riding again soon?!

@Embyr:  Thanks!  [thumbsup] I think I either need to just blow some crap outta the carb, or replace the main jet.  I'll have to take it apart to see.   :-\

@duc750:  Hey Bro! Long time, no see. Whatcha been up to?  The bike is a bit smaller than the monster, so I look kinda large on it.  It's a 2-smoker and top speed is only about 75.  Yesterday I was hanging with a coupla 450 supermotos in the corners, but they would just leave me in the dust through the carousel section and coming onto the main straight.

It's more fun than my Monster on the track, and you have to be really precise with your braking and shifting.  Can't just power out of a corner in any gear like you can with the Duc.

Let's ride soon!    [moto]

i had a pair of those when i was in texas... they're an absolute blast, but it can be a pain to find parts if/when you need 'em.

Thanks for the link derby.   [thumbsup] [beer] [moto]

This thing is a blast!  A bunch of my friends did a 24 hour race at Willow Springs last weekend on their ysr50s and nsr50s. They took first in their class and third overall!  Pretty pregnant dogin'.   [bow_down]
