I have a 2010 696 with barely 400 miles on it and live in TX. I'm wondering how hot is too hot? I want to get an oil cooler eventually, but would really rather not have to buy it immediately since the bike is only about 3 weeks old. After riding for awhile my temp reading on the gauge cluster is 4 bars, is this too hot to sustain? The manual indicates at 5 bars the ecu will kick in to mitigate damage, but is 4 dangerous?
4 is fine. Plus its still breaking in, so the tighter tolerances may be causing it to run a bit hotter.
In traffic or riding hard I'm also in 4 bars....cruising I'm at 3 or 4....no worries [thumbsup]
as animatronic said...it will run hotter when breaking in and it will also come up to that temp very quickly.
In our recent 98F +/- 2F weather, my wife's 696 had no problems. (It was hotter here than in Houston! That just ain't right...)
Of course, I don't know how it might handle sitting in traffic for long periods at those temperatures.
Oil cooler time!
I usually don't hit too much traffic since I work at 2am and leave around 11 or 12 so I get to avoid rush hour. Usually hit more on the weekends. I put about 100 miles on the bike today, and it would stay around 3 bars when I was doing 70 but would jump up to 4 very quickly when stopped, or when pushing it a little harder on hills or corners.
I would like to buy a new seat and mirrors before a cooler, and it seems like that will be ok. Thanks y'all.
An oil cooler can be really cheap:
