Title: Non-linear TPS reset/Calling Brad Black
Post by: DucHead on July 18, 2010, 11:26:14 AM
I'm finally getting around to checking/re-setting the TPS on my '05 S4R, and as per Brad Black's instructions, I'm tapped into the "outer two wires" of the TPS.

However, those two wires give an initial reading of 5.2 V and the voltage is insensitive to TPS rotation.   ???

Obviously, I misunderstood his instructions and I have the wrong two wires, but as I've now rotated the TPS, it will not be easy to determine the correct two wires by reading the voltage.

Any assistance is greatly appreciated.

Thanks,
  Dave

OK, the only two wires that gave sensible readings were the front and middle wire.

Now on to idle mixture...

I'm currently trying to reset my TPS and I can't get a reading other than 114mv.  Is it possible the TPS is bad?

Can you see the ~5V on the two outer wires?  If not, is your ignition on?  If so and the voltage reading from the center wire does not change when you rotate the TPS then something is wrong with the TPS.  Usually though, you should see some kind of voltage change just not a smooth increase or decrease.  A "bad" tps might have sudden jumps or dropouts in the voltage reading but you would still see some kind of change.

I do get 5v on all the other wires but with the thicker red and the red white wire I only get a constant reading of about 113. I have manually rotated it and still I get no change in value.

I've got a used throttle body with tps headed my way.  Hoping to sort this out without buying a new tps for 400 beans.

Forgot to mention the ignition is on as well.

My bike never ran great though so it doesn't surprise me the tps is bad (possibly).  I have issues with stalling and general rough steady riding with occasional bucking and surging.

by the "two outer wires" i meant the outside and inside wires.  wires 1 and 3.  i think anyway.  that's where the terminals go to in my little jump wire bit i plug in to do this.

if it has either 5v or 114mv then it won't run i'd think.

After ordering a throttle body complete with TPS sensor off ebay I had a duh moment.  I was taking the reading off the wrong wires.  I set aside the throttle body from ebay and worked with what I had.

I got lost in the instructions a little with what screw to adjust for the idle stop.  I was using various instructions which helped at times but ultimately confused the hell out of me.  It didn't help that the balance screw was nearly impossible to get too.  I got frustrated  [bang] and did everything up to syncing the tb's.  Put it together to see where I was.  Obviously I didn't get far.  Frustrated with my lame attempt I decided to "slap" on the ebayed tb and go from there.  At the least I figured it came off a working bike so it has to be better then my crappy self calibrated tbs.

Long story short the ebayed tbs worked fine in fact I'd say great.  I haven't had an issue with them yet.

I'd have to say that a tps reset was harder than doing the shims.  But that is my opinion.  I don't think I will every try this again.  It just does not compute with my brain. [bang]

What I wish I did different:

Clean off yellow and dirt from screws and paint my own marks.

Unbolt the (unsure of parts actual name) unused gas diaphragm from tbs.  This would help gain better access to the balance sycnro screw.

Prepare for the long hours of tweaking tiny screws in tight places.

Still unsure if this can be done without the VDST.
