Ducati Monster Forum

OK so most of you know I am a bit of a non-conformist/anarchist/weirdo/eccentric ... whatever you want to call me (they are some of the more complimentary ones).

Although Ozmo-land is not quite this way it has always intrigued me that many Ducatisti consider it essential that the only viable option for exhaust and suspension upgrades are Termis and Ohlins. With my Monster I have almost deliberately gone anti-establishment ... well not really but: no red, wet clutch (not intentional), penske & matris suspension, foran exhaust ... oh and now the virgins. Shit I still have mirrors that aren't attached to the end of the bars, an unmolested frame and baffles (tweety birds) in my exhaust - different? Yep that's me but I think still subtle and unassuming.

So what has gone wrong? Well I think I am becoming a conformist ... in fact I felt slightly compelled to tick off as many Ducati cliches as possible, so what do we have:

. far more machine than my ability could hope for
. poor technique, riding like a granny (no offence grannies)
. absolutely no mechanical knowledge
. red
. aesthetics over comfort and practicality
. dry clutch
. ridiculously low kilometreage coupled with extraordinarily high service and insurance costs
. termis
. the clown suit (whereby I pay for their advertisement)
. ohlins

So like I said ... 'one latte short' of the perfect cliche. Feel free to let me know if I have left anything out.

dont forget the bike needs to sit out the front of a prominent cafe during a sunny Sunday afternoon too! :)  then when you leave said cafe after said latte take off with all noise in first gear so everyone KNOWS you are leaving!  [clap]

Likely to be lots of noise ... a stall ... more noise ... the front wheel unexpected rising in the air with the rear skirming under power ... followed by a rough landing ... low speed tank-slapper ... a pause ... and then cautiously (sheepishly) riding the clutch for a kilometre down the road.

If you have ridden with me you will know how realistic that is :-[

are you saying that "stereotypical" ducati riders display these traits listed above? cause if you are you are seriously blinkered my naive mexican friend!
you southern softies may well portray the latte sipping coffee shop poseurs in the de rigeur ducati clobber ala the harley mid life crisis dickheads but i assure you in queensland, where men know how to ride their bikes, and spanner on them (without the help of our wives!!!) as well as win football matches with boring monotony, we DO NOT!
in fact i would go as far as to say that while most hard core ducatisti can seriously ride their bikes, they also know function over fashion matters, therefore termis and ohlins do grace the scooters but not because it's fashionable but because they're the best, and they work. the dry clutch is also necessary, too much power on offer with the full power bikes compared to the LAMS approved bambinos i'm afraid. And the only clown suits you will see usually belong to the wife or were a freebie with the full power RED missile!
now, if you will excuse me i'm off to skull a bottle of listerine and go have a tug with tabasco sauce as lube!

Luckily, she is worthy ... at least I am under no illusions who wears the (leather) pants in this household. I also don't kid myself about who is the better rider ... she is more than worthy ...

Betty I know exactly what you are talking about there!  I remember taking a mate's 998 out for a quick skirt one day - basically wheelied out of the drive with a rough landing pushing certain gentleman's parts in to my lower abdomen.  Got out on the main road and proceeded to wheelie through first 3 gears - all unintentionally and all at a frightening front wheel height  - the landing was a bit smoother but that was due to license losing speed I had now attained.  I promptly realised I was out of my depth and returned said cliche'd machine (termis, red, anodised clutch cover etc) to Italian friend, and swiftly consuming a mexican beverage to calm the nerves.  I enjoyed the relatively sedate ride home on my 650 Pantah!  [laugh]

The new poster boy for the Shannons ad??  I think that is one cliche you missed - the stubble!  Or does that only apply if you are Italian!

Unlike those bloody 848's ... Ducati's most popular middleweight ever ... which happens to have just as much power and about 30kg less weight - but they aren't as 'unique' right? [laugh]

Betty it seems to me you are presenting yourself as a bit of conundrum now - anarchist/non conformist, and yet you have displayed a deep seeded desire to confirm, and yet have a 'unique' bike! ;D

Now in regards to the 848 may I make a suggestion:  From the photo displayed it seems Jukie is of a smallish frame and may not have the physique to truly manhandle a 'unique' bike like that. Also there is the safety aspect in the unfortunate event that the bike is laid down whilst riding she may not be able to pick it up. SO, an 848evo is lighter and slightly smaller in stature than the 999, and may be the perfect addition to your newly acquired superbike family.  Then she too could join you on latte rides as this bike would also have a lot of ticks in boxes (except dry clutch and high maintenance) for the conforming crowd.

Seat height is the big issue with the 848 ... actually much higher than the 999 despite the weight saving.

Besides she doesn't need any more power ... on her day she has been known to menace more than the odd Superbike with the 620.

I am also tempted to bring up financial constraints but on this board that is effectively soliciting advice on some retarded form of cost/benefit analysis ... so I won't
