Okay,
So I picked up a 2000 M750 about 2 weeks ago now. I got all the maintenance records from the ducati shop in dearborne, MI. The bike has been sitting in a garage for about a year since it's last service. It has 4800 miles on it, and the relivent repairs that were done at the time of service were; Tank flush and seal, fuel filter, spark plugs, replace float bowls, timing belts, and valve adjustment.
The bike has been run roughly 300 miles since the service was done. I rode about 160 miles with no issues. Filled up (didn't over fill it), and rode about 15 miles home. I rode to work the next day and fuel was spilling out the overflow. I got the bike home, and parked it.
That night I pulled the air box off, and pulled the carb units off. I drained and removed the float bowls, and cleaned out all the garbage RTV the shop had put on the bowls. I cleaned out the floats and bottom of the carb really well with carb cleaner and put it all back together. I didn't adjust any of the screws, and the floats are moving freely now, but the bike runs just terrible.
I thought it was not getting enough gas so I pulled both of the vaccuum petcocks off and cleaned them out, and replaced the fuel filter. Put everything back together and it still runs the same. There are no pinched or broken fuel/vaccuum lines. Checked the sparkplugs and they are wet and very sooty. I purchased new spark plugs last night and installed them, but haven't started it up yet. Is there anything else I should be checking? I'm lossed with this bike, and don't know where to go from here. I don't have any real money to put into it rite now. Any help would be very much appreciated.
make sure the float height is fine, the o'rings for the float valve holder are fine and there's not issues with the valve (the seat in good condition and no debris.
also since you're there check the jet o'ring (the one that has the holder from the other jet), basically if the plugs are wet probably you have fuel overflowing into the cyl or leaking through o'rings or poor sealing from the valve assuming the jetting is right IMMO.
The plug swap and fresh filter should work wonders.
It may very well be that that old fuel caused some issues.
Both vacuum petcocks? There's only one.
The Mikuni carbs are pretty easy to diagnose as is the Duc fuel system if it keeps acting up
I finally figured it out! I started it up with the new plugs, and it was running better, but still close to the same. I could tell this time by the sound that it was only running on one cylinder. I pulled the back plug wire off, and nothing happend. I checked the coil and one of the tiny spade connectors had slid of the terminal on the bottom of the coil. I pinched it down tighter, and started it up. Problem solved.
Now I need to change the oil, because it smells pretty gassy.
Thanks guys for your help. I knew it had to be something simple. I guess I just thought it could never be that simple.
