Title: Service Question: 2005 Monster 620 w/ 3,000 miles
Post by: jorgemiranda on July 19, 2010, 08:25:40 AM
Hello,

I'm not much of a poster, although I have been a memeber of the old site and moved over here. I did a quick search but couldn't get solid answers to my questions. If any of you guys might be able to help, I would greatly appreciate it.

I currently own a 2005 Monster 620 with 3,000 miles. Stock except for different cans and mirrors. Unfortunately, I do not get to ride as often as I would like.

I've been having more free time this summer and I've been thinking about the service the bike might need. Since new, it has only had regular oil changes and the 600 miles service.

What service should the bike have done soon? Either replacements or inspections.

I noticed the brake fluid on the back reservoir was getting to the low point. I did an inspection and there does not seem to a leak anywhere. Also, the level is not constantly dropping.

I figured if all it needs for now, I would do the brake fluid change and oil change myself. Given that my closest dealer (Chicago Cycle Center) has not gotten good reviews for service quality.

Thanks for the help.

I would change the belts for sure.

Oil and filter. Some people are always paranoid about the belts. I would say if the bike was stored in a garage where it was kept dry and the temp was moderate, then you should be ok. I would definitely look at changing then with your 6K service.

the belts are 5 years old and are suggested to be replaced at 2 years

100 bucks

vs

scattering the motor

a little paranoia is ok in this instance

I'd change the brake and clutch fluids,  belts, oil and filter if it wasn't changed since the 600m svc or on the last 6 months, and check the nuts and bolts.
also when you put it back together run some fuel system cleaner to remove old fuel deposits if there are any.
the rear brake fluid level low is an indication of low meat on the pads, be carefull since the fluid does not evaporate and as the brake pad runs low the pistons come further out using more fluid to apply pressure, that's why the level lowers.

Thanks for the replies.

I had been wondering about the belts, and I think I will have them changed as well. Given my lack of time to work on this, I think I will go the dealer route, even if I have to go out to the 'good' dealer I know.

Once again, thanks.
