Title: Gun thread number XXXIII - Air guns
Post by: mitt on July 20, 2010, 04:17:50 PM
I just received the latest Pyramyd Air catalog.  The guns in there amaze me in size, power, and cost.  Does anyone here shot anything besides a Red Ryder?

Here is my benjamin 397 air gun I bought about 6 years ago:

It is fun, but I wish I would have bought a modern gun - easier and stronger scope options.

The .50 caliber air guns are just nuts:

I have a couple of high powered thumper Feinwerkbau .177 cal pellet rifles for flying rat (pidgeon) eradication that I got years ago through Beeman. Still kicking butt! And my favorite is an ancient Benjamin pump gun that I had re-worked years ago. Almost everying is solid brass. It's sweet! My older brother had it when we were little then I took over ownership as he "outgrew it" and hell, I'm now pushing 56! How old does that make it?? [thumbsup]

Took my 13 year old step son and his buddy to our family cabin in New Mexico near Cimarron recently and you couldn't pry them off the damn porch and make them stop shooting their pellet guns! They had a freaking blast. God only knows what the pile of spent pellets looks like down range. [laugh] Gave me a damn good feeling watching those boys have so much fun shooting air guns. Can't do that shit in town where we live and boy did they make up for it. Good stuff indeed. [clap] [popcorn]

I have a pair of Feinwerkbau 300's, the old spring piston target guns.  I have shot ISU 10 Meter Air Rifle competitively since the late '70's.  Feinwerkbau also made a M2000 smallbore rifle with the same dimensions as the 300's.  Made a great pair for 10M and 50Ft indoor competition.  My 2000 has been a loaner gun for several of my junior shooters - with a couple of junior state championships to its credit - I'm proud to say!  I'm sort of a FWB nut - I have a pair of 300's, a 2000 and a 2600.

I have a Benjamin 342, which is the .22 version of the 347, which became the 397 after Sheridan acquired Benjamin arms. I got it in my early teens, and it still works fine. I also have a Beeman Tempest air pistol that I still love to shoot.

I have a Gamo single pump .177.  1000fps.  Accurate and powerful.

Only shoots plastic BBs, but at least people agree to get shot by them.  Use to do the whole war game thing long ago.  Had a bunch of them, M16, SR25, P90, G18C, MP5, M92...

The SR25 was up to 550-600fps.  Enough to make people bleed!  [evil]

I have an Airsoft P99 frame pistol that I have had for about 10 years tht I bought from 747imports.com back in the day...and they had some special Tokyo Maruii ( spelling?) import stuff back then...it wasn't even funny how much of hat they had....I am kinda thinking about parting ways with it a lil bit as I haven't used it in a couple years and I don't like the smell of the gas and have never bothered to perform the hop-up mod on it.

So...  This thread makes me wonder...

What would be a good air pistol/rifle for hassling but not killing the squirrels that get on my wife's bird feeder?

a squirt gun or the hose

even just a spring gun is going to cause serious damage to a squirrel

I was thinking Remington 870 12 gauge. Too much ya think? ;D

Sure, Red Ryders are cheap as hell but they spit out those BBs like a MLB pitcher throws a knuckle ball. At least the one I bought my step son years ago. I'd stand behind him as he shot (always a good idea [cheeky]) and I could watch the BB curve all over the place. Hitting anything the size of a Coke can consistently was as much luck as talent. If you seriuosly just want to run them off and not actually hurt them the Red Ryder would be good, it doesn't pack much of a punch.

I just checked the box junior's came in: 280fps. Oh... he lost the gun back to me two months into his ownership. Caught him filling a poor morning dove with BBs in the backyard after we had several long talks about gun safety and not shooting birds, cats, dogs, windows, neighbors, etc. Took my eyes off of him for 60 seconds, results: one dead dove out of season. Kiss BB gun goodbye. I'll give it back to him on his 21st birthday! [laugh]

make the beast with two backs them, their rodents. Kill them.

Or you could build one of these.
