Title: So much for getting that kayak this fall

TEMPE, Ariz. â€" Authorities say a man-made lake near Phoenix will likely lose two-thirds to three-fourths of its water after a rubberized dam burst and sent thousands of gallons of water gushing downstream into a dry river bed.

The 16-foot-high section of the dam on Tempe Town Lake near Arizona State University's campus broke open at about 10 p.m. Tuesday. There were no immediate reports of any injuries and authorities said no structures were in immediate danger.

Tempe spokeswoman Kris Baxter-Ging says its unclear how the rubber dam burst, but she says workers are speeding up an already under way effort to replace the dam's bladders.

She says police and fire were working to secure area around the lake, which can hold up to 1 billion gallons of water.

I'll be riding by in about 5 hours.  I wonder how long will it take to fill this thing back up once they get it fixed?!

If they refill the dam with some cranberry juice that should help.

look on the bright side...
if you get the kayak, you will immediately relocate to some place where there is no need for the thing.

Just need a different type of kayak -- I hear there's a fantastic playboat wave on the Salt right in downtown PHX that only comes in once a decade or so after heavy, sustained flooding... Bet that wave was ROCKING for at least an hour or so!!!

At least 4 months to fix and fill.

Dead fish are being donated to feed the alligators at the zoo.

Actually, it looks like only Tuesday the alligator gets to feast upon the fish smorgasboard --> http://www.azcentral.com/12news/news/articles/2010/07/23/20100723tempe-town-lake-fish-dead-dam0723.html (http://www.azcentral.com/12news/news/articles/2010/07/23/20100723tempe-town-lake-fish-dead-dam0723.html)

That water was SO gross before the damn burst. I've heard that people who would do the Iron Man hated having to swim in it, and when Maureen used to do Dragon Boating down there, she'd tell me that the smell that even splashed water left on her was terrible.

I can't believe that people used to fish there and eat what they caught!!  [puke]

When I was doing a lot of whitewater we used to call em duckys.  Not that there is anything wrong with ducks.
