Title: 2000 M750 speedometer is WAY off
Post by: stevebussard on July 28, 2010, 06:51:45 AM
Hi guys,
I was reading the past posts about the speedometers being off by a certain percentage on our beloved Ducatis.  I know this is typical, my '03 998s was off about 5 mph at 70.  An error I can live with for sure.  My M750 however is off considerably.  It seems to be off rite out of the box, and I'm begining to think it may actually be the speedo itself.  It never zeros out competely. At a dead stop it reads roughly 3 mph, and as soon as I start moving it is up to between 10-15 mph.  I'm cruising 95-100 mph, just to keep up with traffic on the expressway (typically this is 73-75 mph).  So it seems that it is reading approximately 20 mph over at most times.  Oddly enough, the odometer still seems to be pretty accurate.
My uncle has been a motorcycle mechanic for 40 years, and seems convinced that the drive on the front wheel isn't seated properly.  My front stand is not available to me currently, so I cannot pull the wheel to check this.  Is there anything anyone else can think of to check?
I read something about tire sizes on the front.  I know my stock tire size is supposed to be the 120/60/17 (which it is), and that some of the bigger bikes ran the 120/70/17.  If I were to put the 70 series tire on, I know it would help the problem, but I don't know if that small of a difference would "fix" the discrepency.
I have priced out new speedos and for about $70 I can get a new one in a white face, which I would prefer, but I am concerned that it won't fix my issue.  I have also looked into the Veypor units that are online, but am not sure if I care for the look of those.  The SPA units are really nice, but a little pricey for my taste.  Any other suggestions or oppinions?

I'd check to see if the cable is spinning freely inside the housing.

I checked and lubricated the cable, and drive.  Everything is moving freely.

Did you check the giver at the wheel
I had to replace mine after about 25000 Miles

Please forgive me if this sounds dumb, but I have no idea what the giver is.  My bike only has 5,000 miles on it.  I just picked this one up a few weeks ago, and this is the only issue I'm having that I just can't figure out.  If the giver is the gear drive on the wheel, I pulled the cable a couple weeks ago to lubricate everything, and everything is moving freely.  I can't imagine I need to replace the drive after 5,000 miles, but if so, I will be ditching the stock set-up and going digital in some form or another.

pretty sure he was referring to the drive.

A huge discrepancy between the speedometer and the odometer  points to a faulty speedometer.  Both should be off approximately the same, and as a percentage.  No tach?  You can replace it with one of these   http://www.spa-uk.co.uk/design/tachometers/ (http://www.spa-uk.co.uk/design/tachometers/)
or something from these guys   http://www.motogadget.com (http://www.motogadget.com)

The motogadget stuff looks sweet!  And not as out of control expensive as the SPA gages (which are what I really want).  I have been looking for something to give me a tach as well, and was watching a full speedo/cluster with the DP add on tach on ebay.  It ended at $50, and I really wish I bought it, but I think the auction was ended early.  In any case, I agree with you Howie, that the speedo is most likely faulty.  I just need to figure out what to replace it with.  I would most likely be leaning toward the motogadget "motoscope light", does anyone have experience with this?  Also, for the money, I can't rule out the Veypor gage yet... Does anyone have an opinion, or have any experience with these?
