i have 7100 miles. the maint popped out on the mileage screen . it stays for 5 seconds and disappears. i read on the manual that it happens once you reach 10 000 km .
and you have to do the proper maintenance/service to it. what do i have to do ? oil change. filter, spark plugs, air filter... what else?
please let me know.. thank you very much.
S.P
Which model and year of Monster do you have?
When was the last maintenance performed, and what was done?
2002 monster 750 dark. i don't really know when was the last service done. i got the bike on april . all i did was change the oil and oil filter.
Unless you are sure that the 6K mile service was already done before you got the bike, you should do that now. Includes checking/adjusting the valves. Unless you know that the belts have been changed since 2002, you may also want to replace those. Cheap insurance.
when i got the bike it had 4500miles. so i guess the 6k service is not done. how much do u think everything is going to cost? adjusting the valves.. changing the belts ??? i live in NYC.
depends, how far you willing to go?

Take a nice scenic ride across VT into NH to visit DucVet ... only partially joking [thumbsup]
Usually around $600 for the 6K service, not sure how much in NYC. For less than that, you can get everything you need and do it yourself.
i called the dealer today and told me is gona run from 900-1200. + 1 month waiting line + how long is going to stay there... i guess the season is over for me :((
what happens if i dont do it at 6k.. actually now i have 7k on the bike, what if i do it at 12k?
You don't necessarily have to take it to a Ducati dealer, any dealer or moto mechanic should be able to do the job. I'm from NY and although I never had a bike there I'm positive there are plenty of mechs in the city, the boroughs, and even NJ.
Maybe you can forgo the wait if you shop around, you will be without a bike for a couple days though. Keep that in mind if you're commuting outside of the city.
If the only thing that has been done for sure is an oil change, I agree with nomadwarmachine, get everything checked and changed if need...
Valves
Brake pads
Oil/Filter
Plugs
Drain and refresh fluids
Belts
May need to sync the carbs(don't remember if the 750 went FI by 2002)
My 12k involved all of this and it ran me about $900. That's parts and labor. Some of this you can do yourself if you're mechanically inclined which will save you some bread.
The only thing i pay to do on my bike is to sync the TBs, zero out the TPS. Valves, fluid changes, most of the regular service things are not hard to do.
yea i can do some of the stuff myself except the valves or belts.. i asked some shops and they told me that they dont have the proper tools to open a ducati engine...
and i know that there is a special key to open the heads...
another questions.. if i do this major service now that i have 7k miles.. do i have to repeat the exact one at 12-13k?
go to the ny area club and see what they say supposidly there was a good independent shop out in deer park a few years ago called cronic motorsports that supposidly did very good work. but i have no first hand experience.
why do you need to open the heads?
if you are inside NYC, some local shops are Goldcoast, Formula 1, Chronic, ducati soho.
some further out are rockwell, jack trebours and european cycle services (my recommended one).
belts are really simple, and valves...well they actually are very simple if you understand how the system works and very few tools are needed to do valves on a 2v which is why i like them. Very easy access. the only expensive things are parts.
I used Rockewell cycles at Fort Montgomery a couple of times when I lived up that way and they were nothing but good to me, I live in the UK now.
They identified that the ripples in my tank were a no no and called up Ducati NA while I was standing there and installed a new tank for me, under warranty, within the week.
That was 3 years ago though, I'm not sure if anything has changed since then.
Not to mention there are some really nice places to ride up there

If you do all of that now you shouldn't have to repeat the process for the 12k. Belts are good for somewhere around 12k, unless it sits for a long time. Should be fine on the brake pads if they need replacing now. Oil/filter every 2-3k. Plugs should be fine unless you're running either rich or lean, which should be fine when the throttle bodies are tuned.
Another thing that may need to be done is changing the fuel and air filter, completely DIY.
And there is no reason to open the engine. There are inspection covers that are removed to do the valves, no special tool needed to do that.
The shop that told you they didn't have the "special tools" was either blowing you off or did not know what they are talking about. A 5mm Allen key will take off the inspection covers to check your valves. That's it. At any rate, I would not take your bike there.
I would not ride on to 12K miles with 8-year old belts. They cost $80 to replace, and can be replaced in 25 minutes by somebody who knows what s/he is doing.

thats funny. i dont have good luck with them even though everyone says they are top notch. its been over 3 months with no word on the tank.
Yeah, things may have changed since I used to go there and maybe the Ducati NA rep is different.
