Title: Went down hard. need a little help
Post by: Halfast on August 10, 2010, 03:29:37 PM
So getting home from the gym I was wearing a wet tshirt and adidas running shorts under my pants...and that's it.  I live on a very nice and twisty mountain road and went into a 20 mph corner at 50+ like usual, but instead of being in 3rd I was in 2nd gear and when I got to the apex I accelerated a little too hard just as the road leveled off so the back tire skipped with the front tire up in the air (jackass, I know) and I almost saved it but got high-sided from what I can remember and skid and rolled almost 100 feet but was lucky enough not to get hit with the bike (05 S4R).  I'm very very very lucky to get up and walk away with no broken bones but got some very serious road rash that I'll post pics of when I can =).  The bike had frame sliders and bar ends that did their job perfectly so most everything was saved.  Ordered new CRG mirrors, bar ends, replacement slider pucks, shifter, and kickstand which were the only things on the entire bike that were damaged.

So! The bike starts and runs like a champ but the clutch will not disengage.  I'm hoping it's just an air bubble but I'm not sure. Has anyone ever had this happen to them before? My brake light is also stuck on and since the bike fell to the left only, I can't figure out why either of the brakes would kick the light on.  What should I check? They both work fine.  The shifter is bent so it's hard to tell right now but it seems to not click down into first but I got it into neutral okay.  Any help would be greatly appreciated.  I live to ride another day!

EVERYONE BUY FRAME SLIDERS!

I've had clutches act wonky after the bike has bee down-you may try bleeding it. You'll find the shifter is likely to snap if you try to bend it back without heat.

For the brakes, sounds like you have something loose-see if you managed to knock a sensor into a position where it's being held on. If you look at the controls, you should see some sort of switch that would be engaged when you use the brake.

Also, how about "EVERYONE BUY AND WEAR GEAR" instead?

Heal up.

I went down fairly lightly, shifter did not bend, but was caked in mud. Shifting was not right and was making a funny whining noise on decel. Long story short, the shifter arm went beyond it's adjustment point and made contact with I believe the starter gear. Mechanic said he had to shave the worn edges off the gear and re-adjust. I'm not sure if you have this problem, but you may want to at least look there.

alright how about

dude, sorry to hear about the mishap.
hope you heal fast not halfast  [laugh]

glad the bike seems to be doing decent, with just a few issues from what sounds like a hard highside.

will look at frame sliders today

BUT i do remember getting on you one time when you were showing the new exhausts about wearing some gear. you would have walked away with zero injuries on a highside! very few can say that.

Haha I know, points well taken.  Thanks for the insights on things to check. Parts are all ordered so I should be good to go shortly.

I thought everyone was wearing gear???? People gauwk at me when it's 100+ and I'm wear my full-face helmet, gloves, boots, and leather jacket. Hell yeah I get hot. 1/2 hour ride home and I loose 5 pounds. I told myself after my first accident that I will not ride without gear. Good to hear your OK.

i'm not comfortable without gear, but sometimes i'm not comfortable WITH it. People make valid points about the heat. I too am in Pennsylvania. The humidity is killer. Factor in that we also don't deal with hit all year round, so we aren't as used to it as some people in other places of the country. I've taught myself to adjust my riding style (spirited-ness) as I adjust what gear I'm wearing. I.E., if I'm riding to work in a t-shirt, jeans, and sneakers (obviously helmet and gloves are still mandatory in my book), then I ride slower and more carefully than if I wear wearing my jacket, boots, etc. etc.

It's always a risk on the bike... sometimes I'd rather get somewhere without nearly dying from heat exhaustion.
