Title: Rizoma frame sliders - anyone crash them?
Post by: asherrick on August 11, 2010, 07:42:04 AM
I'm looking at getting frame sliders for my M696 and was curious if anyone has had any experience with The Rizoma sliders in an actual crash or drop?  I think they look nice, probably the nicest of the group (for which they charge dearly, I might add), but I'm curious how well they actually protect the bike.  They don't look like they would work as well as the Speedymoto sliders and it appears that the frame would take more of the impact with the way the sliders mount.

No FHE crashing (knock on wood) but I bought PSR sliders at a good price from motorcycle superstore.

wouldn't that snap off in a low side?
looks like it would only work if bike is sliding in the same direction inline with the frame slider.????

I've, unfortunately, had real world experience with them.  It wasn't a low-side, but a pretty serious "drop."  I impacted a guard rail at <10mph and the bike fell onto the opposite side and hit concrete and dirt.  The vertical portion of the slider bent in slightly, but it still protected my tank, engine case and rear sets from damage.

If I still felt the same way about their looks, I would've replaced them with another pair.  But I decided I liked the look of the SpeedyMotos more and they were cheaper.

Thanks for the feedback, guys!  I appreciate it.  If there is anyone else out there with the Rizoma sliders, I'd love to hear from you, too.

I've got the same frame sliders on order at the moment for my hypermotard, I looked around at the other types and decided to go with the rizoma ones as they looked the the option.. [thumbsup]

I have seen the speedymoto sliders work very well on racebikes at the track at speed. They work as they are designed to do.They are race proven and BGB approved! [thumbsup]

+1 on the speedymotos. I also liked the Cycle Cat sliders - they're a bit chunkier but quite similar to the speedymotos (and have a set new in the box in my garage. I should really clean stuff up and throw a thread in the parts for sale forum).

+2 on the Speedymotos, I had a slide whem a pedestrian decided to come out in between two parked cars. Bike slid on the pucks and had no damage at all. Ordered new pucks and that was it.

Thanks guys!  In the end I couldn't justify the price of the Rizoma frame sliders.  Of the more traditional sliders I went with the slightly more subtle Motovation sliders over the Speedymoto's.  I did go with Rizoma for my axel sliders, though.  Now to get everything installed...

I've got the Rizoma axel sliders as well. They're the best I've seen out there. Rizoma did a great job on those.

okay i COMPLETELY retract that last statement.  They saved the motor, but not the tank. frame is okay, but you understand what i mean about the design though. The frame mount isnt cracked or warped in anyway because all the pressure is on that lever arm [laugh]

yes.

www.kuixihe.com (http://) and check the 2nd blog for crash report. riding up on the paint fully leaned over and the kickstand threw my bike out.

I thought you were going to ride minus kickstand?

but you're ok right?

im fine. i slid and rolled for a bit but i landed on my feet. I re-tech'd and was out on the next session 40 minutes later.

i didnt want to do the kickstand thing because i dont want to bother with bringing my rearstand all the way to my friends house just to load it up on the car.

Well i paid the price, i think if the stand wasnt there, i would of been okay. I shouldnt of been on the curb that much anyway. but you live and learn. im not going to track the monster anymore because say my rear tire caught and it flipped the bike, id have no street bike. So im getting a dedicated trackbike.

Im riding the monster faster and faster each time, and eventually im going to make another mistake and i wont be so lucky. its just the fact of trying to go fast on the track. So no point in chucking a perfectly good street bike.

here is me riding before i chucked it. I love the DS1000 motor and im already reaching the lean limits of the bike. and i dont want to get rearsets and i also dont want to chuck a perfectly good street bike because im grinding hard parts. so thats why i wanted a SS, but then i crashed and now i rather just have a full on trackbike.

So...the reason for getting these frame sliders (after 5,000 miles on the odo) was so my wife could ride the bike.  When I got the 696 the intent was to hand it down to her and I would get a new bike.  Being that she's not the most coordinated person and somewhat error prone, I knew that sliders were a requirement.  Two weeks ago she passed the motorcycle safety course and got her license.  I installed the Rizoma sliders earlier in the week, a Barracuda wind screen, ASV levers, and this morning the dealer installed the Motovation frame sliders.

We left the dealer and went to a parking lot to get her acclimated to the bike.  Unfortunately, on her first go she underestimated the large turning radius of the Monster compared to the bikes she road in her safety course and promptly ran over a parking curb sending her flying over the handle bars (taking out both mirrors and the new Barrarcuda windscreen) and the bike went for a little solo trip until it finally fell over.  Fortunately this was a very low-speed accident and only her wrist is hurting (no sprains or breaks).

All I can say is thank God I bought those sliders!!!  The Motovation frame sliders took the brunt of the impact, with the Rizoma axel sliders each taking some scrapes.  There appears to be no damage to the frame, tank, engine, forks, swingarm, etc.  The stock exhaust took a small scrape on the edge, though.  The handlebar appears to be bent along with a torn grip and scraped bar end cap/protector thing.  The new ASV lever took a small scrape on the end, but nothing a small amount of touch-up paint can't cover. The worst damage, however, is a bent front wheel.  Not sure if the rear is OK yet.  Anyway, I rode the bike straight back to the dealer (~2 miles) to have it evaluated. Ugh!

huh?

turning radius is as small as  you want it. she needs to lean the bike not just turn the bars.

glad she's relatively ok. maybe the weight scared her more than the turning though.

also asked her if she fixated.

gotta look where you want to go not where you don't want to go.

good report on the slider though

its not as small as u want, its as large as u want. The monster compared to other bikes cannot do a 3 pt turn, it does more like a 30 point turn.

A monster can do the MSF figure 8 in the box just as easy as  other bikes.

My instructor asked me to use more of the box at one point cause I was turning so sharp. Made the Harley guys look too bad.

of course relearning with clipons...  [bang] couldn't do the damn figure 8 at all when i was on the practice pad the other day.
