Title: S4R thermostat opening temp?
Post by: sws on August 11, 2010, 09:04:09 PM
Hey guys,

I'm curious about the proper opening temp of the water cooling thermostat.  On my S4RS, it seems that the thermo opens up at about 155-160F, such that when the weather is cool and I'm keeping my right hand in check the engine temperature gauge ends up around 160.  My gut says this is too low; most auto thermostats I think open around 185F so operating temp is around 190.

What do you see for a low-but-warmed-up temperature reading?  Time for a replacement?

Tim

Pull over to the side and feel the radiator.  If it feels cold, the thermostat did not open yet.  The nature of the beast is to run that cold in the winter, even with a closed thermostat.

Per the S4Rs service manual, the thermostat begins to open at 149 degF, +/- 3.6 degF.

So it's supposed to start opening at roughly 145-153 degF.

I'd say your thermostat is just fine.  [beer]
