Title: My new Car............
Post by: Tiffers on August 11, 2010, 09:30:49 PM
Not sure why Jud's thread got locked as I tend to ignore his ramblings at times, but I got my new car tonight.

It is a 2010 Jetta TDI Cup 6 speed manual (I love manuals, hate automatics), race suspension, cool rims, etc. The only think I hate is the fact we are required to have a front license plate which takes away from the pretty front grill. Jud suggests I take it off, keep it in the front seat and if I get pulled over, just say my husband hasn't put it on yet. Another great Jud idea. Fine is 50$ (zero points) for not having a front plate, but lots seem to do it around here.

I want to thank him for all the negotiating and financial work he put in to making this deal happen. Most don't know exactly all he does at work, but he is brilliant with numbers, analysis, and critical thinking when it comes to our personal finances. I have learned a lot from him since we started living together and eventually our marriage. It also helped that his cousin is in the business to help advise him on pricing and more helpful we are both friends with a guy that worked for the dealer for 10 years. Of course he likes me more than Jud  ;D

Sorry for the less than stellar pictures. We didn't expect to get home so late, but the idiot financing guy when he was explaining he warranties gave us incorrect information on the pricing of the Premium (the best) warranty. Luckily, Jud questioned it later and we got it sorted out, but had to re-do all the paperwork.  [roll]

We opted for the 85k/or 6 year warranty (whichever comes first), GAP Insurance (as our insurance company does not provide it), Enviroguard by Rositall (or maybe the other way around, I don't recall, he negotiated it. Basically it is a paint, rim, and interior protectant warranty for 5 years. Get a rip in the seat from a dog.........free replacement. Get birdshit on the hood and leaves a stain....they fix it...one of our dumb friends yacks in the car.......the clean it), rim and tire warranty (hit a pothole.....all over here...bend a rim, free replacement of tire and rim. Catch a nail.......new tire), and also it included LoJack. Figured this was a good option as it is a special edition car and on average, 19 cars a day are stolen in the Columbus area.

Enough talk......now on to the shitty pictures Jud took. My D60 couldn't handle the darkness when we got home, so we had to use our Olympus Stylus which is not nearly as good and je couldn't get as good of pics as I wanted (I am getting into a side business of professional photography. I already have a website and several jobs booked. PM me if you'd like my link to see my real pictures). Not to mention, he isn't allowed to touch my camera  ;D

Note: some pictures might look like here are scratches on the car, but there aren't any. I think it is due to lighting and the lens being dirty or just possibly leaves, etc.

Enjoy.

[laugh] [laugh] [laugh] [laugh] [laugh]

It took him like 10 tries to get it in the driveway.

Let's keep it on topic so like my thread, hers doesn't get locked.

I am in love with the car, but it isn't mine to drive  :( and as she eloquently pointed out........I suck at driving a manual car, but yet I ride a motorcycle just fine.

Same concept.......just need to adapt the hand operation on a bike to the feet operation on a car.

Reverse is rather odd.

You have to push down the shifter and it is the upper left position.

but shit........it has such a short shift throw.........no mod needed there.

Probably will tint the windows and call it a day for now. oh yeah..........it will get a Ducati Sticker and a Indy Racing League sticker.

I've stalled my car about 4 times now too so you two aren't alone.  [laugh]
In my case I'm guessing the slower revving nature of the diesel and having to readjust to a bottom hinged pedal. But if you have done it as well and are coming from a VW, albeit an automatic previously, then maybe it might be something else.  ???

Looks great.  [thumbsup]

does jud have to sit on a phonebook?

congrats on the new ride!  looks good!

on the front license plate issue, i had the same dilemma with my M3.  i left it off for a while and after a couple of fix-it tickets, finally gave in and put it on.  you're right though, never looked good.

then the other day i noticed my neighbor's M3 ... on the front plate, he rigged it up so that all that was visible was the letters/numbers ... i.e. you couldn't see the "california" part or the registration sticker.  now, i have no idea if that is legal or not, but the effect was that it made it look like a european license plate and actually looked pretty cool.  i'll try to get a pic and post it.  just something to think about

That actually would be really cool, but I wonder how much it would hurt the fuel economy?

I am pretty sure I'll have to buy some stock jetta rims and put some bliztek's or other snow tire for the winter. The warranty covers against salt damage on those rims, but I think the tires will probably suck.

Ok, your neighbor must know my brother or something. He did the same thing on his Audi S4. He bent up the plate to just show the plate numbers, and attached it that way. The problem is we live in an uppidity community with a "forbidden topic public service group" that numbers in the 20's at all times. It would be a ticket magnet.

Check around for aftermarket front plate mounting solutions. Chances are there's something out there.

MN requires a front plate, and there was no way in hell I was drilling holes in the bumper to mount the giant plastic factory monstrosity on my GT500. Found one that mounts between the lower fascia and splitter that tucks it in nicely.

I don't like the stigma attached to BMW's; it is very huge where we live and is annoying as hell. Might not be like that elsewhere, but everyone here has one and they think they are kings of the world (BMW Finance is located in the city we live in). Also, we like to keep our car payments relatively low and a BMW payment would be too much for how we manage our money.

I think I will join the TDI Forum (might make some people very happy if I spend more time there then here), search around, post the car, and get some feedback on where to mount it. However, I refuse to get the mod bug, also said wife wouldn't let me touch anything on the car.

Not sure what that means, but there are several boards and there are a lot of Jetta owners.

I've lurked for quite a while which is a lot of the reason we decided to dump the 04 for a new one.

Tiff wanted the Cup, but we thought the price would be too high for what we wanted to pay, but we got 3k off the sticker. That is way below invoice.

Some will argue, disagree, whatever......but car dealers do not make money off new cars. They make money on used cars and service. My cousin is in the industry and my roomie from college's dad owns a bunch of dealerships and he is the GM of one and he said the same thing. The only way to make money on new cars is if the manufacturer says "hey, if you sell xx amount of these cars this month, we'll give you xxxx.xx in rebates

I am not sure if the warranty sheet is VW specific or a package by the dealer in association with VW.

Without getting into too much detail, there were four extended warranty packages.

Obviously the Premium down to the standard.

Each one dropped off one item as it lessened.

I calculated the cost of each one, the savings I get on my insurance with LowJack, etc etc.

It came out to be a good deal.

Remember, I crunch numbers for a living. Numbers that north of 100mil.

I don't fall for crap when it comes to that.

Also, the warranty came from the financing guy, not the salesman. He didn't push any of them at all.

He explained each one and let us decide. He wasn't pushy at all.

We talked guns the whole time  [thumbsup]

Thats great that you crunch numbers for a living. That doesn't mean you know a single thing about the car business. Did you bother to negotiate the prices on any of the back end items you purchased? Do you realize that unless there is a national program running on interest rates from the manufacturer (and you qualified for it) that you can negotiate the rate? I only ask becasue the markup is probably $1000% on everything but the LoJack. So... do the math numbers guy!  ;)

Additionally if you discussed ANYTHING other than the items you purchased and pricing while you were in the finance office, you fell right into the trap they layed for you. They will purposely try and get your attention off the real task at hand which is the deal your about to sign. Having a friendly conversation about guns is not a smart idea unless you are pointing one at him.

No offense but I've sold many vehicles to customers who do accounting or work with numbers for a living and they are the worst at getting a deal than anyone else.

It's also standard procedure for you to speak with someone other than the sales guy to discuss the aftermarket items. In fact, they usually don't want the sales guy speaking with you on that stuff. Why? Because the finance guy does it all day every day and is usually a much better salesman!

I would also like to know what warranty you purchased from what company. There are a lot of them that suck. By that I mean they state they will cover specific items if warranty service is needed but then they look for any excuse NOT to cover it. Lack of adhearing to the schedualed maintenance plan for example. If the warranty company states in their fine print that you have to tap your head and rub your tummy at the same time while the dealer changes your oil, you need to do it or they will refuse the claim.

Why would you buy an extended warranty on a brand new vehicle that already has a 5 year 60 K warranty on it. Essentially you bought a 1 year 25K warranty because the factory covers it until then.

The GAP is also interesting. Did you put any money down? If so, how much? The ONLY reason you should ever buy GAP is if you already owe more than the vehicle is worth when you drive off the lot. This most often happens when there is little to no down payment or if you're trading in a vehicle thats worth less than you owe on it so you have to transfer the negative equity onto the new loan.

They will purposely try and get your attention off the real task at hand which is the deal your about to sign seperating you from the money you thought you saved in the earlier negotiations.

This most often happens when there is little to no down payment or if you're trading in a vehicle thats worth less than you owe on it so you have to transfer the negative equity onto the new loan.

thanks for posting Mash. i was thinking the same thing, but don't sell cars or work in accounting.  [cheeky]

1. Interest rate was 1.9%, so no, I didn't put any money down as I am earning x.xx more annually than the interest rate, so it is a terrible financial decision to put money down. I won't disclose what I am earning in my investment accounts, but the spread on the 1.9% verse what my money is earning is large. Therefore, putting a down payment down would have been a bad financial decision.

2. GAP is standard on a loan through VW Financal based in Libertyville, Illinois. I drive the car off the lot, lose 30% right there, car gets totaled. State Farm will not pay me out what my loan is worth, so I am make the beast with two backsed. GAP did not cost me a dime.

3. You are incorrect about factory warranty; It is 3 years or 36k miles, whichever comes first. Please do your research before you mock my decision  [roll]. Want me to take a picture of the sticker for you that spells out the included factory warranty?

4. I knew the options before on the other items which I purchased in the warranty and yes, I did negotiate them to an extent, but treaded carefully as I got a very large sum off the sticker. The dealer broke even on my trade and what they sold the VW for.

I work in the Automotive industry also...and I can say...extended warranty companies SUCK to have to deal with...it really pisses a customer off that spent 1200-2500 on said extended warranty and they get told that they have to go fight to collect the difference from the warranty company because they only covered said $$$ figure for that repair and it in reality it costs umpteen number of dollars more...so it ends up being a lose for the consumer to an extent in the end...

but I guess since Judd is so smart he already knew that and all the ins and outs of how to work with and negotiate with a warranty company since they hold no bearing or association with the vehicle manufacturer.

extended warranty is through VW to my knowledge

Mash - 5yr/60k is Powertrain, 12yr/unrestricted miles is paint corrosion pending VW's approval. So far, they have been fair on that.

can a mod lock this thread?

I am sick of bickering about the decision we made.

The car is fun, get's great mileage, and gets it's first road trip this weekend, unfortunately it is due to my wife's grandfather's funeral  :-[

The 1.9 is a great rate and is probably a national VW promotonial rate as I mentioned before. Also, GAP is NOT standard on every VW contract. It is standard on every VW lease contract so unless you leased it I would go check your paperwork. If there is a charge for it (probably around $595), then it wasn't standard. This also could have changed but I doubt it. I was actually a sales manager for VW for 4 years so I have a little knowledge of how they operate.

You are correct regarding the current warranty. It was longer, but they must have changed it recently. My 2008 Passat had a 4/50 comprehensive and 5/60 powertrain.

If you think for a second the dealer broke even on the deal, you're more BooBoo than Yogi. Sorry.

I could get into all the specifics including dealer cash vs. comsumer cash and dealer holdback etc. but I'll leave some of our black art a mystery.  ;)

I'll look at my paperwork tonight.

Yeah, they did change the warranty terms as my 2004 had a much longer standard warranty and I believe the powertrain was 90/100k, I can't remember.

I know all about dealer cash, consumer cash, holdbacks, dealer incentive rebates, etc. You probably do know more than I on this. The guy who hooked me up with this dealer was the sales manager at that dealer for 10 years before moving to a finance manager for 15yrs. I spent a lot of time talking with him since I met him about the workings of the car world. It is pretty odd. He got hit hard by the economy and for about a year was flipping cars at auctions all over the country. It was a pretty wild gig he got himself into and claims to have made a shit ton of money doing, but who knows.

He now works for one of those "extended warranty" companies you mentioned above.

Hey........drop 3800$ on your 5yr car for warranty.........and if you don't use it in 5yrs.......you get your money back!!!!!!

He'll even admit it is a sham. It's kind of funny.

Carry on in the thread. No more finance, warranty, or BS talk.

I'll post some real pictures this weekend since it is supposed to be nice tomorrow and the first ones sucked.

debating on tinting the windows on it. We just can't decide what percentages to do. Only law here is 50% on the driver/passenger window. backseat and rear windows can be painted black for all they care. I just don't like the idea of a superdark tint when my tag is tied to my CCW.

2004 the powertrain was 5/60

the last year VW offered a 10/100 powertrain was 2001. 2002 started the 5/60 powertrain. So you remember incorrectly.

Thats only somewhat true. They prorate it. Even if you don't use it, at the end of the term, it's not worth anything. If you cancel it before the term ends you get the reamaining portion of it back less the cancellation fees etc.

2.7   "Baiting"      Some people find it fun to push and poke at members while believing they technically are within the guidelines in how it's done.  Then when the subject does something in return that violates a guideline, a 'report to moderator' is done.   This is childish and such 'baiting' will be cause for a permanent ban.   It is at the discretion of the administrators whether someone is being a jerk and baiting.
