Title: BP
Post by: GAAN on August 13, 2010, 01:14:06 AM
My daily 3am buddha posting came up...

Dalai Lama - It is self-evident that a generous heart and wholesome actions lead to greater peace and that their negative counterparts bring undesirable consequences. Happiness arises from virtuous causes. If we truly desire to be happy, there is no other way to proceed but by way of virtue: it is the method by which happiness is achieved. And, we might add, that the basis of virtue, its ground, is ethical discipline.

my first thought was

Joel

I hope things are better for you and the family today

yes best wishes to all wherever you are in the world.

Every day is chance to start again in life and be happy, life truly is what you make of it.

I try to be the best human I can be, despite my personal struggles ...........but as I look around me ,mine are no worse or no better than anyone elses here-they are just different.

Joel ,take comfort in knowing that you are loved and that people here do care about you and your family.

Be well Friend,

Erica.

As I watched 3 hours of the Nat Geo channel about the Universe, I am wondering if I actually exist at all ?

The Universe is said to be 78,000,000,000 light years from end to end.

Hard to make sense of a figure that large.

The Hubble telescope has allowed us to be able to actually see to the end of the Universe and the end is still expanding from the " Big Bang  " ( which most Scientists believe created the Universe ) faster than the speed of light .

The Universe is estimated to be 13,500,000,000 years old.

We;ve sent radio messages to some distant Stars...they will get there in 25,000,000 years. What's the use ?

Lastly please watch this most incredible video ever taken in 3D by the Hubble Telescope .

ah grasshopper but the extreme size means all we observe is of the same small nothingness so while you may view yourself as unimportant, you are effectively of the same importance as the worm and the entire planet as far as scaling goes. And if this is but one of billions (or more) universes than you are worth either less or more depending on your perspective. The question is what is the scale of measure for all things.
My preferred measurement is the what you can achieve with the tools given you and the impact it will have on others, therefore BP has great worth.

A reasonable conclusion if you are in fact correct in assuming we really do exist.

I'm not sure you have grasped our minisculness in the overall vastness of the numbers of the occupants of Stars, Solar Systems, and Galaxies in the Universe.

We are but one Solar System in our Galaxy the Milky Way Galaxy that consists of 5 hundred thousand million Solar Systems.

How can one not feel insignificant or possibly may be not even exist at all or be a less than an Amoeba in size and scope as less than a speck in the Universe .

unfortunately I have a grasp of such things (being in the car 5+ hours a day will lead to such thoughts)
unfortunate because such thought is the type of stuff our little brains aren't designed to conceive thus headaches are a norm for me
if one can conceive of a thing they can begin to understand it, knowledge itself is not power, understanding is.
Understanding brings worth, therefore headaches are worth the effort.

neither knowledge nor the understanding is power...... sharing it is.

From the time I was aware of the Universe I questioned my existence and what lay beyond the edge of the Universe.

I have always believed in a Supreme being.

But I have always wondered what was before there was a Universe and has there always been a Supreme being.

I believe in Christianity but still am in awe by these thoughts.

before there was this universe, there was a prior one. Maybe every sentient being gets a turn being the Supreme being of a universe. Maybe next time it'll be your turn, now make sure you do a good job as we'll all be watching.

My friend said to me "I think the weather's trippy." And I said "No man, it's not the weather that's trippy. Perhaps it is the way that we percieve it that is indeed trippy." Then I thought "man, I should have just said 'yeah'."

Believe it or not I have not done illegal drugs of any sort, hell I avoid prescription stuff and rarely drink even.
I've also been contemplating existence long before I had a long commute. As a kid I got over any fear of the dark by taking long walks late at night, inattentive parents can bring some good it seems. Those walks also led to deeper thought, and were best done when snowing as it got very quiet out.

I'd go further than scratching the surface on my overall thinking but don't want anyone to think me weird.  [laugh]

it was the previous nonsense collapsed into a singularity, nonsense that dense is not stable therefore it is expanding once more. Once the nonsense expands too close to where the sane are they push it back and it collapses once more.

Questions about our insignificance or if we exist at all are not new.  Descartes wondered about in the 1600s and in the "Discourse on Method" he wrote "Cogito ergo sum" "I think therefore I am."  Which is about all I need to know to convince me that I am not some thought floating around in someone else's bad dream.

Ducpainter I think we were ingesting the same stuff back in 69.  It's how I ended up finding out about Descartes.  I used to wonder why the masses worried about such mundane things, like how do I make a living or where is my next meal coming from when I didn't even know if I was real or, awake or dreaming.

A more contemporary questions of importance might be, how many wackos are there on the DMF and who are they?  Am I one of them?
