Title: places to ride and people to ride with
Post by: linearpower on August 15, 2010, 02:19:48 PM
Hey,
The GF is coming out to SF from NYC for work and is interested in both renting a bike and doing some riding around the area while she is out there... I believe its the wknd of the 27th 28th and 29th...

She is an intermediate rider, has a 620 here in NYC, and wants to get out and see what the roads are like out there... So much good riding to do...

Does anyone have any suggestions about where to go ride??? or interest in going out and doing some riding that weekend...??? weather permitting...

Thanks so much....

So those routes in the resource link sound good in and around SF... what about rides up in the direction of NAPA....?

...and is anyone interested in doing some riding over the course of that weekend with her... either in and around NAPA or along the coast and up US 1....

Thanks...

I can lead a peninsula run, but NAPA is too far right now what with the new offspring and all.

In outta town that weekend, otherwise I'd gladly lead a ride up the coast.

A bunch of us will be in NY that weekend for DQ + BG's wedding.  :P
We love visitors and showing off our coast.

You can't go wrong on HWY 1 around here. It's dreamy from Big Sur to Oregon. Some of the best riding in the world.
In fact, half the car commercials you see are on HWY 1 just north of the Golden Gate Bridge.

Here's 2 big recommendations:

1) Take up MrIncredible's offer to see HWY 1 south of SF, Pescadero Rd., 84, and back to SF. EPIC. Class act.
2) Even if you can't find another escort:  Cross Golden Gate Bridge by 9:00AM, go North on HYW 1 until you're really hungry. Find an oyster bar on the coast. Eat lunch. Go back. Best day ever #2. Dress for foggy and 62degrees F, and or sunny +90F. It will be both.

There are 100 more complex loops and routs if you want to get complicated.

I will most definitely be getting my swerve on with all you SF people at the NYC wedding party/fiesta/ extravaganza/ ruckus gathering... I'm looking forward to meeting you all and if only I had more than two motorcycles here in NYC... I'd take ya all on a ride... :)

Might just have to substitute having some beers...  [beer]

Well look forward to the out of town company... and if anyone needs any NYC info/suggestions let me know and I'd be happy to help out... and if anyone needs a couch in NYC that's always open as well..

I also wanted to thank you all for your input... I'll take you guys up on it and do what I can in the way of connecting resources... Thanks so much for the offer MrIncredible....

The NYC sky is turning an orange color as the sun sets in the middle of this hot and humid NYC summer evening... hopefully it will cool off in time for you all to arrive... anything is possible..  [laugh]

If I'm around that weekend, and I probably will be, I'd be happy to show you some goat tra fun roads up the coast. Hit me up with a PM or email me at mmoore at healthinfodesign dot com.

I'll be riding this weekend if you want to come up north and tour the wine country.  Plenty of great roads to choose from and usually less traffic.  You can post up or shoot me a PM before Saturday if you're interested.

FYI If you're heading up Hwy 1, they are repaving from Pt Reyes to Tomales.

Thanks, that's good to know. I guess it's been too long since I did the "big loop"!!

Bah! What an idiot I am - I completely forgot about Dave's warning on the repave thing.

Good news is it was 1 lane so we were able to sneak to the front, and had clear sailing from before Marshall up to Tomales. The center line was ground down, but we don't cross over that, now do we?

The weather was perfect and traffic on the lower part of the loop not too bad.  Beautiful day for a ride.

Hey,
Thanks for the help... sounds like it was a good ride... and to think I'm stuck in NYC pulling my monster motor apart trying to diagnose the metal on metal sound in there... :)
I'm missing that route one ride and the trip down to Stinson beach.... man those were some nice turns to tear up on the CBR I rented.

I seem to recall some metal on metal engine problems on that ride too :(

Yeah you are right Mr DQ... there was some random metal on metal sound on a random 900SS on that trip I believe... :)
I'm hoping mine isn't a big problem... otherwise I'll be dropping this motor and putting in a new one if I can find it... lol

It turned out to be a beautiful day - the fog cleared and it was mostly locals on the road, so they pulled over. Kelly had some issues with scraping hard parts on some of the tighter hairpins (damn Bavarian tractors!) but she did great, and I hope got to appreciate why we all put up with the madness that is CA.

I think she was riding again today with a different MOBster, and the weather was perfect again.

Here are a couple of photos from Nick's Cove, on the coast between Pt. Reyes Station and Tomales:

Great meeting you today Kelly!  It was another beautiful northern California day.

We met my friend Jim and headed out of Napa on 121 up to Lake Berryessa, then up 128 and out Berryessa Knoxville Rd.  After a brief detour and rest, we headed down Pope Canyon to Chiles Pope Valley and over the hill through Angwin via Howell Mtn Rd.  After a quick dash up the Silverado trail, we cut over to 128 and found our way to Castello di Amorosa for some sight seeing.

A failure to find lunch in Calistoga put us back on the road up 128 to Healdsburg and then out senic Dry Creek Rd.  Where to head from there?  No trip to Healdsburg would be complete without visiting Skaggs.  Luckily a CHP ran through minutes earlier and cleared out all the squids and we pretty much had the road to ourselves.  Perfect timing.

I had to leave to pick up a rescue dog we'll be fostering, so I headed home from there.

Hopefully Jim showed you a more interesting way back to Napa than my "adventures in lanesplitting" down 101.

Wow, nice route! I love, love, love Chiles Pope Valley and the ride to Angwin. And of course Skaggs!

Um, Joe, shouldn't you be doing something else besides checking the DMF right now? Just sayin'...

I can multitask...

i get the distinct sense that joe has been multitasking since he left SF and continues to do so over the Italian sector.... :) as the posted pics might indicate... The rides that you all got to do sound really awesome and I'm simply going to have to come out and do some serious riding and have a few beers  [drink] since I'm feeling pangs of jealousy...  [thumbsup]

Glad to hear it all went well... good times on two wheels... and now that I have that ancient BMW k100lt I could just ride all the way out there....  ;D

I can only multitask when there's decent internet connectivity. That does not describe most of Italy. Just arrived in Bologna only to hear about a tragic death at the Moto2 race today. Sad.

Hey,
Yeah I heard about that tragedy as well also... strikes me as really sad and unfortunate... between that and Lenz passing away its been a bad stretch. Hopefully this is the last of it for a while... but the world is on end since Pedrosa is doing so well continually... :)
Hope the traveling is going well in Italy and look forward to hearing further stories of the escapades Desmo Joe...
As for the riding in SF... maybe we can coordinate when you get back.  [thumbsup]
