Title: 2010. The year I learned the lesson of Job.
Post by: Grampa on August 18, 2010, 06:19:27 AM
Bob had been losing weight. The thought was..... with all the extra pets in the house he's stressed and he's just not eating as much.

Michelle took him to the vet yesterday to have him weighed and checked out. They took blood samples.

His kidneys are failing.

BP, years ago I had a little friend named Feelicks who had the same problem.  His kidneys were done for, vet said he had maybe 15-25% function.

I opted for the hard road -- I bought cases of lactated ringers (saline) and subcu needles and IV hose -- home dialysis.

A year later, Feelicks was still doing fine.  Flushing his system out 2-3 times a day was hard.  He finally succumbed, after about 16 months.  Vet said he'd never seen a cat last that long after kidney failure.

It's an option.

We're getting fluids for him this morning. The Dr said this may help him live another year or so.

if you are doing what i did, you can order them online for a lot cheaper than the vet will sell them for.  half a bag per go.  cat doesn't mind being stuck so much, just alternate locations.

Oh my word Joel.  I mean "Job".  No kidding.

Welcome to the club.  Well, make that the "cat with failing kidneys club".  That "other" club you're in, the one with the black cloud over it, I'd rather not be involved in that one and really wish you would cancel your membership.

Sorry to hear about another stress that's close to your heart that has been added to the list.   :'(

Big hug to Bob and you and Michelle.

Dammit, Joel. Knock it off.  >:(

There's only so much bad luck to go around, and you've been using WAAAAAY more than your share lately.

Srsly, tho, mang, that sucks.

You've had way more than your share of hurt this year. I've had two cats that went through kidney failure over the years; one of them took the ringers treatments pretty well and got a whole lot of relief out of them, the other refused - violently - and I finally had to understand that I was making his life worse by trying, not better. That wasn't easy, but it did help us both that I spent his last few months doting on him.

Good luck. You deserve a whole lot of it.

My ex-wife and I did that for her cat. Yeah, it kinda sucked but it did help her live a while longer... the cat that is. The cat would have this lump of fluid under it's skin but it would slowly absorb and disappear. Can't remember exactly how long we did it. It was a long time ago.

Sorry to hear but I'm sure that cat has lived a wonderful life with you caring for it and any remaining time will be as good as it can be.
You're a good man and I'm sure Bob would agree that his has been a life worth living.
Here's to hoping you're just getting all your negative times out of the way all at once now allowing for an uninterrupted upcoming run of good luck.  :)

My biggest concern in all this is Bob not being in pain. I dont want to prolong his life here just so I can have my kitty. As long as he's not in pain.... I'll do what the dr's say to do.

As a happy side note.... Bob tore up my sister inlaw the other day. She brought drama into our happy home, and he was having none of it ;)

I just brought Bob home from the vet. He spent the past few days having the fluid treatments done, and some folllow up tests done.

The doctor says that his kidneys are just shutting down, and they saw no signs of the treatments doing him any good. His test results actually got worse after treatment.

I have decided to just bring him home so that when he decides it's time for him to go, he can go in a place where he's comfortable.
