Title: Mole Control
Post by: Speedbag on August 23, 2010, 12:37:17 PM
BASTARDS!!!!!!!

They are totally destroying my lawn.  >:(

I've tried smoke bombs and grub killer (they eat 'em) to no avail.

If anyone has any tips for killing these little make the beast with two backsers, I'm all ears.

Have 3 cats.

Trouble is, not one of them has ever been outside. They all freak out when you try to take them out. I think they'd disappear forever if left alone outdoors.....

I need the scarred-up old tom from my former workplace.

do you live in a place where an outdoor cat would be ok?

they are highly effective.

how about one of those ultrasonic things that are supposed to drive away rodents (annoys them?)  Don't know if they work or not.

How about this?

The problem with an outdoor cat is it pissing off the neighbors.

Used to have a cat that spent half his time outside. He did a great job of leaving various headless corpses on the deck for my approval. And kicking the neighbor's pussy yellow lab's ass. Unfortunately, he vanished a few years back; he was highly territorial and I suspect he tangled with a coon or coyote one night and finally met his match (or the neighbor did him in  >:( ).

I just came in from touching off the latest round of smoke bombs. They seem to be hit and miss.

I need something more positive.....

Some of the guys in charge of protecting new grape vines around here use a combination of poison and these:

This is most for gophers though.

A Jack Russell will take care of your mole and cat problem. And opossum.  And snake. And frog/toad. And groundhog. And rabbit. And squirrel.

My last one exterminated at least one member of the previous list.  He took on a beaver and that didn't end well, not to mention the cow that he attacked!

Happiness is being owned by a Jack Russell Terrier.

I've got pocket gophers at my farm. Same sort of nuisance critter. Whenever I see fresh mounds pop up near the yard I'll back my Craftsman lawn tractor up to the freshest one and cram a section of garden hose (used just for this purpose) into the tunnel and stick the other end in the Kohler exhaust. Set it on idle and sit back and have a beer and cigar. The line from Wizard of Oz is very appropriate... "the poppies will make them sleep!" Funny how the trail of mounds tends to end right there. Weird huh? ;D

Screw you PETA!!! [laugh]

We used to have Moles that would ruin a Golf Green.

Used the spring loaded pitch fork like devices that you set on the tunnels and when the Mole comes by it trips the spring and you have squired Mole.

I had a mole problem in my back yard.  After the snow melted in the spring my lawn would look like some one plowed it.

I tried the spring loaded traps with no success.  I tried sprays with no success.

What finally worked was a combination of milky spore powder http://www.stgl.us/gstore/productcart/pc/viewPrd.asp?idcategory=44&idproduct=4006 (http://www.stgl.us/gstore/productcart/pc/viewPrd.asp?idcategory=44&idproduct=4006) and those reusable mouse traps.  It turns out moles like peanut butter.  Who knew?

Mouse traps and PB worked for me too.  I was having the same issues with holes and "runways" as they call them, all through my lawn and landscaping.  I caught three in about two weeks.

I've heard the milky spore powder works too.  I'll be getting that next year.

My father in law hates moles. They love his yard. I looked at the web site and it is not for sale in Washington state.
Says that it is safe for animals too? How does it work then?

+1 for terriers!
I've got a  couple rat terriers. Last month I was sitting on my porch reading the paper and heard my dogs digging furiously in the yard behind me. A minute later I heard something screaming like hell as they ripped a mole out of the ground and tore it to pieces [clap]
Good doggies.

Gonna try mouse traps and peanut butter next. The smoke bombs, although fun in their own way, aren't cutting it.

I think you were on the right track with the explosives idea.

It works great!  I've used it on two lawns and so far so good.  It's a spore that destroys the grubs digestive system (if I remember correctly) and causes them to die.  The dead grubs help spread the spore for future grubs.  They say it can last up to 20 years.  And it's safe for all animals.

I've tried almost every off-the-shelf grub control (poison) and none really work.  I've even tried some commercial stuff that requires a license to handle.  The poison and most fertilizers don't go to far into the ground.  The grubs simply dig deeper and wait for the poison to go away and then come back up to feed on the roots.

The Rodent Blaster is the next best thing, but far too pricey for the average homeowner.

However, I am an engineer and I own propane tanks.  [evil]

we had ground squirrels in Oregon....
make the beast with two backsers would destroy the lawn, eat the wiring in my truck, you name it.
couldn't really poison them because of all the birds of prey that were in the area.

after one expensive repair to the wiring on my turbo, i went out and got a brake barrel pellet rifle with a scope.
now, i am not the best shot in the world, but the level of satisfaction when you see one of the little make the beast with two backsers die close up was definitely worth the cost of the rifle.

I'm partial to the red mist that occurs when you hit a prairie dog with a 22-250 or one of the wssm's.  That is satisfying!

get a dog.  my mini dachshund killed over 20 mice plus a rat when nearby construction sent them running toward my house years back.  it was awesome.  my neighbors all wanted to borrow him.  good luck with that.

how about hooking up a whole bunch of metal stakes in the ground and hooking power up to them all and sending a charge through them at once shocking the ground?....
