I know it's an accident because he probably didn't intentionally launch his car into an overpass support column but really? Stupid is as stupid does and the term "accident" kinda reaches out for sympathy to me and he doesn't deserve any. I'm sure the guy would rather have died that survived that crash.

It's funny how the reporter says that they are investigating to see if speed had anything to do with the accident. Ya think?

I wonder what kinda shape the overpass support column is in. That was actually my first thought. Well, almost. First I thought, "Wow, he caught a lotta air." Then I thought, "Huh, I wonder how that column handled the impact."

I saw that this morning... wow.

And yeah, I thought 'Well duh speed was a factor' when the reporter made that comment.

This happened about a block form my house! I was having breakfast on the deck when the CareFlight chopper came in- sounded like it was going to land in my yard. He passed a State Patrol cruiser which is where the video came from, he wasn't being chased. Speed was estimated at 80+. No reason why yet- the kid is critical (duh). Today they are inspecting the bridge. The impact point was about 25 feet off the ground.

80+ I think that's a given. He blows by that trooper like the patrol car was parked. Even if the trooper was doing only 55... that car looked like it was doing a solid century and then some.

really interesting twists to this story.

he had been arrested that morning with alcohol opened in the car, marajuana and an underage girl. he was released less than an hour later!

sounds more like attempted suicide at this point.

So someone posted his bail? IIRC, he's a 19 y/o kid. If I just bailed my kid outa prison, I wouldn't be leaving any car keys around. He'd be in the cellar with a padlock on the door.

saw that yesterday 80 sounds like a low estimate for that much air i think. but then again with all that energy having to go somewhere up is the only option. awesome.

Looks like the car turned to the left just before impact.  Otherwise..he would've been toast.

I'm crying right now because of how funny this is.

who knows the guy might have had a malfunctioning car with stuck acceerlator and he panicked, and this was an accident, only investigation will find out.

but damn, that thing was airborn guess those barriers won't stop you if you go fast enough i thought they were supposed to prevent cars being airborne when hit.

i don't think that pole would have too much damaage it was holding up an overpass that thing was probably at least 4-6 feet thick and as much as a car is that is probably solid concrete, no car is moving that post.

it is insane how the car basically exploded into small parts to where it looked like it literally disappeared.

That is a regular guard rail, to keep people out of the bridge support, I guess. The ends of the railing are brought down to the ground and finished off. It acted just like a launch ramp when he caught it.


Also, an update: he was released from the hospital and is home now.

I'm thinking maybe Toonces the driving cat strikes again. Or the dude has watched way too many Dukes of Hazard reruns. Are we sure that's not a Toyota with a stuck accelerator?

That's a reinforced concrete column. From the video it looks like it had some pretty significant damage, as all of the concrete outside of the rebar looks to have been broken away in the top 6'-8' where it attaches to the beam supporting the bridge. That column may be designed for high compressive stresses, but I doubt it was designed for a lateral impact like that. That's one reason they have barriers at the bottom of the columns...so they don't have to take vehicle impact loads. Column may not have been moved...but I'm sure it required a decent amount of repair work.

In the slow-mo it looks like the car launches off the ground and goes over the guardrail.

It says he was ejected - Is that him sliding down the road on the far right side of the film???  Judging from moto gp accidents, it sort of looks like a body sliding and flopping down the road.
