Title: Help! Bike won't start.
Post by: Chileno123 on August 30, 2010, 07:51:08 AM
So I've searched around and tried a few things and couldn't get it to work, so now I'm posting.

I'm try to start my bike after about a year w.o use.  I naturally expected the bike not to start bc of a dead battery.  i hooked it up to a car using jumper cables w.o turning the car on, and the electronics all started working.  left it a minute.  tried to start it.  no go.

did that a few times w.o any success.

i then turned the car on figuring it wasn't getting enough juice.  same thing.

when i hit the ignition button, i hear the bike tryin to start, but the engine isn't turning.

as soon as i disconnect the cables, the electronics go off as well.

little help?

thanks!

Battery is completely dead and you should not be using a car battery. I would either try hooking it up to a battery tender for a full day or simply buy a new battery. Is the bike carburated or fuel injected? Can you hear the fuel pump when you turn the key to on?

Was the bike 'winterized' ?

Ie. was it sitting with fluids in the engine that shouldn't have been there?

thanks for the quick answer guys.

i too think the battery is just dead.

to answer the other questions.  no it was not winterized.  I can hear the fuel pump (or at least what i think is the fuel pump.)  The bike is fuel injected.

i know.  shame on me for not winterizing it.  unfortunately i had to leave the country on fairly short notice for work for almost a year and didn't really think about it.  it's been in an unheated garage the whole time.

any suggestions to make sure i get this thing running right?

Drain the tank and put in fresh fuel. Recharge the battery and then try again.

Using a car battery is fine.  The bike draws the amps it needs, not what the battery has to offer.  Dos the starter motor crank the engine?  If so, I suspect stale fuel since the bike was not winterized.  Fresh fuel and new plugs and a good battery it will probably start.  If your battery was not charged all winter you probably need a new one too.  Charge it and get it load tested.

There are two funny noises when you start the FI bikes.  The needles sweeping the dials make one noise.  The FI pump pressurizing the system makes the other.  Make sure you hear the FI pump, you can see the sweeping needles, but don't confuse the sounds.  If you do not hear the FI pump, replace the FI relay under the tank.
