Title: Steering stop adjustment
Post by: citizin on August 31, 2010, 04:02:26 AM
Hi all - I just purchased some clubmans and risers. Installing them should be a breeze, but from all the posts I've read, it seems like I may have to adjust the steering stops so that I don't make contact with the gas tank.

How in the hell do you do this? I've looking for the information in my Haynes Manual and online, but can't find anything on this.
I've got a 00 Monster 750.

I also need to adjust my stop since they replaced my tank and I need to set it back to stock.

The screw with the lock nut in the lower triple you see in the photo is the adjustment, one on each side.

bringing this topic back from the dead.  To increase steering sweep remove hte steering stops completely?  I know not to make sure they interfere with the cables and wires and throttle cable.  Bike is Monster S4 with stock forks and Speedymoto triple.

You sure you want your fingers and tank to work as steering stops?

The point is to adjust the stop to where you have finger clearance between the tank and the bar. Yes, you could remove them completely, but why? Unless you're looking for a rationalization to get your tank painted.

I'm totally with you, however, I don't know the proper way to adjust the bolts to increase the sweep while not dinging or denting my tank.  I'm not going to be happy with myself if after paying DucPainter for a new paint job I go and dent/scratch the thing up.

My S4 has a new triple and LSL clipons so the sweep is a bit off, turning right has more sweep than turning left.  So I'd like to increase the sweep to the left but i figured it beneficial To know how the whole process works.  Does increasing sweep to the right decrease sweep to the left or does it now matter at all.

Sorry if these questions seem a bit junior!!!

The adjustments are independent of each other.

To increase the left turn you adjust the right stop by shortening the length of the screw protruding.

If the turn radius was the same to both sides before - meaning similar feeling of how much you were able to turn the bars in a small radius turn - then adjust the same on both sides.  If you have different tank/controls clearances now, maybe the new clip ons are mounted a little off?

Doh!  I thought you wanted to eliminate the stops.  There is a factory spec for the stops, but since you have aftermarket stuff the spec is useless.  Below is a photo of the adjustment.   Loosen nut.  Turn screw in to reduce lock, out to increase.  Tighten nut.

Follow Ducpainter's advice, stopintime's also.  Leave sufficient clearance for your hand and switchgear plus a little extra.  If you have a steering damper recheck the travel in both directions.  You may need to readjust the damper or stops to accommodate.  If this is a problem post a photo.

The workshop manual says to adjust the steering stops so that you leave 6 to 7mm between the frame and the fork tubes. They use a 6.5mm shim (A) as in the following picture

I'm glad this subject came up.  I hadn't looked at it since I installed my City Bars and I did today.  Looks like I can shrink my turning radius significantly.  It will really help in the place I store my bike.

Make sure that you don't pinch any wires, cables or hoses with the extra rotation you get.

Check also that things aren't getting stretched.

Check throttle freeplay with bars turned full left and right.
Start the engine and do the same test, adding throttle at full lock when maneuvering can be a bad surprise.
