SANTA ROSA, Calif. -- A Santa Rosa entrepreneur who was working with a business in India to promote electric motorcycles in that country has died in a car-motorcycle crash near a California shopping mall.
Santa Rosa Police Sgt. Doug Schlief says 29-year-old Matthew Dieckmann was riding an electric motorcycle near the Coddingtown Mall at about 10:40 a.m. Monday when a Toyota Prius collided with the cycle.
Schlief says Dieckmann hit the car's passenger side. He died at the scene.
It wasn't immediately clear whether Dieckmann was wearing a helmet. Schlief says investigators are still trying to determine who may have been at fault.
The Prius driver, 71-year-old Gilbert Dorame of Santa Rosa, wasn't hurt.
Dieckmann was the founder of Santa Rosa-based Electric Race Bikes.

Just FYI, for folks not in California, there is a helmet law.

64 and 71 are totally different.
when you hit 70, you better get your sight and reaction times tested, especially if youare driving a prius.
is there a different requirement for different types of vehicles?

AFAIK, if it's got an engine or motor, and it's got 2 wheels, helmet is required.
Here it is:
California VC 27803. (a) A driver and any passenger shall wear a safety helmet meeting requirements established pursuant to Section 27802 when riding on a motorcycle, motor-driven cycle, or motorized bicycle.
And in Cali, a bike w a sidecar is not a motorcycle under the law. Props to Gov Ahnold.

If I am driving a Prius I will be getting more than sight and reaction times checked ;D

400. (a) A “motorcycle†is a motor vehicle having a seat or saddle for the use of the rider, designed to travel on not more than three wheels in contact with the ground.
Wow.
Not to make light of the subject, but the events up until the crash itself were probably eerily silent. And this may (or may not) have been a factor.

Let me rephrase my comment. I shouldn't have said they are not considered a "motorcycle" rather that the licensing for the rider is different.
In California, you do not need an M class endorsement to ride a 3-wheeled motorcycle.

Cool, that clarifies it, I thought I had missed something.
Grandpa made a left turn in front of the guy. Seen it happen often and experienced it myself. People make the beast with two backsing need to pay attention-both driver and rider! >:(
So sad, here's a link from the PD with better info.

From that article link, it seems that the Prius (Gilbert Dorame) turned left in front of the moto (Matthew Dieckmann).
We don't know how fast the moto was going.
Was he doing 100 in a 35 zone?
Those streets around Codding Town Mall are kind of sketchy. There's a weird intersection and the freeway is right there, plus there's a street that merges from an odd angle. You really need to be on your toes there's a lot of stuff going on there.
