Title: problem with speedo and odometer on M696
Post by: photovillage on August 31, 2010, 03:51:29 PM
I'm thinking that I'm perhaps missing something very obvious, but here is my situation...

My dash lights, sweeps at start up, cycles through the A and B switches, but does not read speed or add miles when I ride.

The Mph are always 0 and the odometer stuck at the point it was last week.

So, I thought about what I did last week...mostly just ride on regular old paved highways.

I checked the sensor on the back wheel to make sure it was a) there, b) clean and c) tight. I followed the wire up to underneath the brake pedal and it seemed tight. I unplugged it and replugged it in just in case.

I pulled out the fuses in the fuse box and the little dangly 2amp fuse and they all looked good...though I did not change any since none appeared blown.

Then I tried to trace the wire up to the dash itself, but I wasn't sure which connector it was hitting...so I sort of tightened each by pushing together. I did not open and reseat them though.

My next thought was to pull out the multimeter...but, since I'm still a novice mechanic...I thought I might ask here in case someone is like "damn, sounds like your ground in XY position came undone..."

My thought is that it wasn't something big like the computer, since it does it's start up sweep and that seemed to indicate to me it was more likely in the sensor or wires?

All help appreciated!

bests,
R

Isn't your bike still under warranty?

could be a bad sensor at the back wheel.

there was a 999 with the same problem about 2 months ago at our shop.

I would take it to the dealer if you are under warranty. If not, try to find someone to swap the sensor at the back for a test.

Strangely enough - I just started to encounter something similar... also on a 696.

My speedo doesn't stick at 0. It'll usually work properly, and then alternate between fluctuating wildly and settling at 0. My odo keeps ticking up, however.

You can add my 696 to the club.  Just started yesterday.  I have about 7,800 miles on the bike.

Mine stays at 0 and the odometer doesn't increase at all.  I'll see it jump around anywhere between 0-60mph for a few seconds but then it stays at 0 the rest of the time.  I'm thinking the sensor at the rear wheel is bad.

Other then that, the bike runs normally.  Just sucks not knowing how fast you're really going except by calculating speed via rpm's (which I suck at).

Haha, speed via rpm's for me is Stop and FAST so take your pick.

This really interests me though, bike is out of warranty in 13 days.... I'm getting nervous about stuff like this.

Update: I brought my 696 by the dealer, and there was a recall on some of the wiring under the seat that I hadn't done. They fixed it up, charged me nothing, and sent me on my way - haven't had this problem since. I believe the recall applies to some of the earlier model 696's.

UPDATE:  This past weekend I washed my bike for the first time since I developed this issue.  After washing and drying (I use an air compressor to blow out water in all the nooks and crannies) I let the bike sit over night to let the wax cure before applying the second layer.  The next day I took it out for a ride and lo and behold, the speedometer and Odometer work again.

The only thing I did was spray a lot of cleaner on the connector where the wheel sensor connects to the other wires under the right rearset.  I then rinsed it with a lot of water then dried it with said air compressor.  Dunno if that did it or not.

I did check the connector when the issue first developed and didn't notice any dirt/grime in the connector. Everything was tight and secured at that time, too.  Dunno if it was just coincidence or maybe the connector was dirtier than I thought???

At any rate, I hope this isn't a fluke.  Its good to know how fast I'm actually going again.   [leo]
