just wondering if any of you guys get out and shred the slopes?
being that i have lived in jersey the past few years i call mt creek home (gotta love the jersey ice [bang] haha)
getting on a mt is my favorite thing to do even more so than riding the duc...(did i just say that out loud? hahaha)
me. :)
10 years and still lovin' it
Tele, baby.
live for it. I got the duc to hold me over in the summers
Having finally gone to the vet i'm hoping not to have anymore kids so I can resume my youthful winter games.
I started back in 92. Grew up in the shadow of the Canadian Rockies. ;D
Second favorite activity for me without a doubt.
I really dont get to get out that much anymore though. Kind of sucks but wattayagonnado? :-\
I've rode since the early 90's and just got back into it now that my wife enoys it more. We are counting the seasons until my son can learn. Anyone know how young you can start them?
I've seen little monkeys about 3-4 y.o. go whizzing past me so I'd assume that as soon as they can balance they're fair game for learning. Probably depends more on the adventurousness of the monkey in question.
just started this past winter! and luving it [beer]
needed something to occupy me when i cant ride!!
been snowboarding since the mid 80's. exclusively since 88
5 years as a "pro" - board bum in the Colorado rockies
never shredded though.... i just ride

Been riding the Colorado mountains for many years now! Haven't skied since the first day I tried snowboarding. Kinda want to tele this winter though.
Been riding for about 10years now, but last season was slow for me :-[
skied for 6 years, been boarding for 5 years, haven't skied since [thumbsup]
pretty much gave it up last year. winters are just too shitty around here. too much ice has ruined it for me. anyone want to buy my K2 fatbob? it's HUGE at 162cm. I lost a lot of weight, and can't turn it anymore. Last year that they made it too. I'll let it go cheap, make an offer ;D

Speaking of snowboarding, I'm making the trip up to Hood the week of the 4th of July again. You still claim Gov't camp as your stomping grounds?

Nice! I've been riding them for years. They make the best all mountain boards for sure.
From the Silverton website...
Although we cap the amount of unguided skiers to less than 475 a day, most days have less than 80 skiers on the mountain. Ah... heaven! ;D

Thansk! Had to train like mad and take max Diamox for the altitude, but it was a blast. We went the guided route. Bought tix for 4 days, but couldn't handle 4 straight days at Silverton. We sold the 3rd day and went to Ouray for the hot springs instead. I've got the beacon, shovel and probes....4 more month on the stairmaster and hopefully, I'll be good to go again! I was at Jackson this past season for 4~5 days.

I'm still riding the same Fat Bob when I started riding in '95. I've been to all the local spots here in the Tacoma - Seattle area; Loveland and Winterpark in Colorado; Whistler in Canada; Bogus Basin in Idaho and Heavenly in Lake Tahoe. I learned early that I could jump anything but I could only land on my @$$. So I just ride and enjoy with my backside intact.

Yep, been riding since about 1994. Started at Mt Brighton then onto Mt Baker.........let's just say there is a teensy weensy different. Still riding that last Vashon Island produced K2 El Dorado and LOVE IT for Baker, Whistler, Stevens and backcountry. Now I"m looking into kiteboarding!!!
I started in '86. Summer camp on Mt. Hood in '89. Taught at one of the biggest ski and snowboard schools in the country for 6 years and wrote a manual on how to train snow board instructors. Recently, I've spent 4 months each winter renting in a ski country town and boarding big hills. Truckee, Bozeman, Bend, Ketchum, so far. Altogether I've boarded 90 lift served areas and have spent many days in the back country (about 54 in Tuckerman Ravine, for example).
Winter of 07-08 I logged a total vert of more than 1,500,000 feet included a personal best day over 70,000. Here's a screen capture of the log for the 70,000+ day from my Suunto X6:

What Manual did you write? I started out as a snowboard instructor when I first moved up to Truckee back in '98. I did the whole PSIA/AASI III thing, also did some backcountry and coaching certs. One benefit that I love about being fully certified is the free lift tickets, but it seems more and more resorts here in the States are no longer participating in that program anymore :-\
Quote from: Kaveh on July 01, 2008, 04:51:53 PM
What Manual did you write?
I taught at Nashoba Valley Ski Area, a 180 (optimistically measured) hill that is probably the largest ski and snowboard school in North America. They claim #2 so if anybody argues that they are bigger, Nashoba can just walk away and say "somebody has to be." Nashoba is located within the metro Boston area and has a population base of around 6,000,000 people within an hour and a half drive. Management has brilliantly marketed six and eight week package lesson programs from third grade through the area colleges. Nashoba claims that it gives over 10,000 lessons per week. Vail, which might be #1 in terms of number of staff, probably does that in a month.
Most of the 125 snowboard instructors on staff are part-timers who are high school students. The turn-over is about 30% each year. They had the same director of snowboard instruction for about 20 years and he insured a good continuity of method and a reasonable training program for the new instructors, but his last year was my first. I became a staff-trainer my third year; became concerned about loss of quality control in my fourth; and volunteered to write a manual to be given to new instructors and to be the definition of our syllabus and system.
My manual is based on the AASI syllabus and progression. The manual, in addition to discussing work ethic because some of our trainees are on their first ever job and pedagogy because none of them have ever thought about what it means to teach a sport, breaks the entire board learning experiece from never-ever to full command of carved C turns down the fall line under all the circumstances we can present at Nashoba -- roughly just into Class V -- into a series of single steps, each of which introduces only a single new concept or skill. At each step, the manual identifies the new skill, describes why it is essential to progress, tells how to teach it, identified the symptoms of most common errors, and offers tricks, techniques and strategems for fixing the errors.
I gave Nashoba an unlimited but non-exclusive right to the material. Their initial thought was to hire a professional photographer to illustrate it with instructors in Nashoba uniforms and use it both as a teaching tool and as institutional advertising. To my knowledge, they have not gone beyond using it for their own training program.
The manual was very particular to Nashoba, discussing the use of specific trails or teaching areas at different stages, listing area policies that impact teaching, and giving rather chatty tips on various local color and tradition.
I started preparation of a generalized version with the idea that it might be published as a "Teach Your Buddy How To Board," but one of the reasons I retired at 55 is because I really don't have the personality to dig into somethat that boring just to see my name in print. (I'm already in Who's Who in the World and Who's Who in America for other reasons.)
Personally, in the winter, I'd rather be out boarding in the backcountry and in the summer I hike, climb, canoe, windsurf and occassionally take 2000 mile trips on my Monster.
Keep the P-tex down (except during really well-tweaked Methods).
Tommy T.
I've been riding for about 15 years. The last five I've been riding almost year round, usually 200+ days easy. I've spent the last five years living in Mammoth Lakes, Ca. Done the Mt Hood thing for about 8 years as a coach at one of the snowboard camps up there. Grew up learning and riding in Vermont for almost ten years. This is the first summer I haven't been riding, got too burned out the last few years. I'm what some of you may refer to as a "park rat," but don't think for a second I can't ride the whole mountain. I welcome a spirited "race" down anything and when I beat you switch don't feel bad. Got a sled to get me out to the real good stuff if needed.
I have loads of equipment if anybody here ever needs some for a good deal. Couple boards, bindings, over a dozen outerwear setups, gloves, goggles, you name it. I should be headed back to Mammoth this winter if anyone ever wants to meet up and take some runs. Mt. Baker has been calling my name for years, but once again I don't see the move working out.
It's snowing up high in Co from what I've read. Can't wait for the first powder turns of the year ;D
Mt. Baker is the most consistent mountain available for those of us in the PNW, and I'd venture to put Whistler/Blackcomb on that list. I've never had a bad day there. It's about 3 hours from home for me so it makes for a long day to travel up and back so I can't wait for my kids to get old enough to take them on a weekend trip like my wife and I used to be able to do. I'm not ready for it to start snowing but when it does we watch the snow reports with great longing.

Guess I went to Hood for camp before you started boarding. Carrol Camp in '89 with Jeff Davis teaching 'pipe. Tina Basitch was a hanger-on with the staff and I (the lawyer) reviewed her first pro contract for her.
QuoteI welcome a spirited "race" down anything and when I beat you switch don't feel bad.
Every time I see a Eurocarver who thinks he's really hot I challenge him with that line. "I can beat you in a top to bottom race, no air, no tricks, if I get to pick the course -- fakie through the trees." Against a good all-round boarder with sound technique and your kind of experience about the only race I'd have a fair chance at would be a time trial format in technical terrain over 55 degrees with mandatory airs. Between a free-fall line and an "I'm too old to die young now" attitude, I'll have a good enough chance to put a drink on it, but not much more. I'm too skinny for anything with contact potential like boarder cross and I enjoy steep and deep too much to be well practiced at flawless carving on
hardpack.
QuoteI should be headed back to Mammoth this winter if anyone ever wants to meet up and take some runs.
Since "Hell froze over" last March, I think I'll spend this winter between Taos and Angelfire. I've never riden either of them although I've hiked in the Taos Ski Area vicinity on climbs of Wheeler Mountain (N.M's highest).

i have hills an hour away, but will gladly drive four hours to a mountain (http://www.mammothmountain.com/).
I have a season pass at a local hill (Devil's Head) near Baraboo WI and when they don't have horrific ski lift accidents, I am there one or two days of the weekend. I may not make it to real mountains this winter, :P
I have been skiing since 1984 and have snow boarded for five or six seasons. I taught skiing for 5 seasons at Chestnut mountain in Galena IL during and just after college. Just skiied two days last weekend and with the fresh snow that's falling right now, it should be nice this weekend too.

He Man,
i'm a big fan of NeverSummer boards. Whatever you end up buying, be sure to demo a rocker camber before buying anything. Not that I have the cash, but I would love to upgrade all my boards to rocker camber boards. They are the bomb!
ive been looking at a burton Hero. its a v rocker. suppose to be a good all mountain board with really forgiing edges and its on sale at $225! cant even find a better deal on a used ebay one.
So while I'm sure most of your can't wait for spring to get here any faster, I'm hoping we'll get a few more good storms here in Ca. The weather has been amazing, but I'm not quite ready for spring yet.
I just wanted to throw up this video edit of myself and all my friends. We all ride for the same shop and we did this for the shop site/blog thing. My stuff starts at about 6:48 into the video and ends around 7:28. Everyone one in it is either a roommate or a close friend. We are gonna have some more as time goes one too.
Live from Mammoth (http://vimeo.com/9841751)
He Man-If you ever have any questions about gear feel free to ask. While I do ride for some companies I have the chance to test dozens of boards a year. I don't think the boards I ride are remotely what you are looking for and I can be rather objective about other companies stuff.
I've been boarding since 05 and it rocks. Pity the snow in Aus doesn't, and I don't get enough time away from work to get overseas. daaaaaamnit.
But I'll be hitting the slopes again this year - I do only live a 2 hour drive away from our ski fields :D.

I think the Hero is more of a park board. I would look for something all-mountain that you can progress and then find what riding style you like the most. I started this my first season with a used Burton Cruzer from eBay. I'm hooked for life!!

My understanding is it's good for park and powder since the nose of the board rides higher. I typically ride a 164 NeverSummer Titan, but have found the board a bit short in deep powder and not as nimble in the trees. The rocker-camber 165 I demoed floated through crud pretty well and was faster turning than my 164. I think the only place you give up on a rocker-camber is high speed cruising stability since the effective length of the board is shorter when not on edge...your thoughts?

91 for me first board was a HOT sorrels for snowboard boots ha ha high school.
now ride A GNU and a HEELSIDE with FLOW boots and Bindings. Watching the evolution of that technology was fun, and expensive.
took the last five years off got back into it this year with new boots and bindings.
Rocker/reverse camber boards are generally made specifically for powder riding. They float a million times better due to their shape. Now that doesn't mean they can't be used as all mountain boards. I know plenty of people that ride all over on reverse camber boards.
There are many version/shapes of reverse camber and each companies rides a bit different. Generally at high speeds on groomers reverse camber shapes can be a bit "twitchy." Now for some (beginners/intermediates) it might be hard to get used to that. You have to ride the boards different than you would a regular chamber. Now I even know some very experienced riders that don't like the way reverse chamber boards ride at high speed on groomers. It's all about getting equipment that works for your needs.
As far as park is concerned people are generally split. People that jib a lot tend to like reverse chamber boards as they are easier to press. Jumpers and pipe riders in my area are split. I can tell you from personal experience the last thing you want to worry about is a twitchy board when you are heading into a 80+ foot jump. I never really had a problem adapting to the new shape and I generally enjoy the "surfy" feel they have.
A newer variation of all the chamber business would be "hybrid" chambers. That's what I am on now and I love it. Super stable at high speed and has great float in the deep stuff. The board I am on has reverse chamber in between my feet and regular chamber on the nose and tail. As of now I know Lib Tech and Never Summer are making these, I'm sure other are too. It's the best of both worlds in my mind.
Just a note on Burton. With the exception of their very high end stuff all their boards are made in china. Some are still made in europe I believe, but I'm not sure where. Many other huge companies are also having boards pressed in china and it really doesn't mean the board isn't good. More likely to break under pressure, sure. A bad purchase, not at all. In fact many board companies use Elan in europe to manufacture their boards. There aren't many manufactures out there really.
Thanks to all that liked the video.
