I just bought a 2006 Toyota 4Runner a week ago. It was certified used by Toyota, still under the original warranty, plus I bought the extended full bumper to bumper platinum warranty coverage. The maintenance light just came on. Will I have any luck getting the maintenance done for free? I was looking through the legal jumbo-mumbo, and it looks like I didn't buy any maintenance coverage, just service (and only for things that break down).
Anyway, this is bullshit.
As for the 4runner, it is super pimp. I got the Limited Sport Edition SR5, complete with hood scoop. I highly recommend getting one if you are in the market for a truck or SUV. I'll post pics a bit later. It rides super nice, it is the most luxurious vehicle I have ever owned, the rear seats fold down to transform into the cargo capacity of a small truck with canopy (and they fold really flat). It has 4.0L - some decent power, given it's size.
I guess it depends on what maintenance is needed. My maintenance light comes on when it's time for an oil change, among other things, and oil changes are not covered under warranty.
I have a Scion, which is Toyota as well, and when I take it in because the maintenance light is on they usually have to run a diagnostic. This, they say, cost around $90. If the problem is covered under warranty then I don't pay the $90. If it's not under warranty then the $90 goes towards the repair.
Either way I would take it in and have the dealer find out why the light came on, may be just in need of a simple oil change.
I highly recommend getting something like this if you are going to own a 1996 or newer car. They cost around $100 bucks and will save you many hundreds of dollars over time.

Most certifications require the vehicle maintenance to be up to date. If you just bought it then ask your salesdood if it was done. Could be they did it and just forgot to reset the light.
Is it the "Maintenance Reminder Light", which is red in color and comes on every 5K to remind you that you need service?
Or is it the "Check Engine Light" that would indicate there is a problem with the vehicle?
The Maintenance Light needs to be reset by the technician after the services at the 5K interval. It is possible they forgot to reset it.
In any case, if the vehicle is "Certified", and you only bought it last week, you're covered under the 3 month warranty that comes with the Toyota Certified Used Vehicle program.

+1 And this IS the case with Toyota. In order to be certified the vehicle has to go through a complete checklist and the maintenance needs to be performed.
aguacate,
did you get this resolved?
I brought it into service a couple days ago, and they checked the records. They did the service a few miles before the light was supposed to go off, and did not reset it. Since they already did everything, all they needed to do was reset the light.
According to them, the orange maintenance light only comes on for oil changes and tire rotations.

Glad to hear it was something minor.
And they are correct.
It is a maintenance
reminder light.
It will start to flash at 4,500 miles after it was reset, and will stay illuminated at 5,000 after reset.
