Title: Bouncing Tach neeedle
Post by: dlearl476 on September 02, 2010, 05:36:11 PM
Having grown up on BMW's with mechanical tachs, I never paid much attention to this but I noticed something funky on the ride home from work last night.  My tach needle has been bouncing around a bit around 4500 rpm.  Last night, while maintaing the same speed/rpm, the tach would bounce a bit, land on 5K, bounce again, land on 4K for a bit.

Being electronic, I imagine it's an intermittent connection somewhere.  Where do I start?

I had a similar problem and it was due to the needle servo/motor mounting tabs being broken.  It was the shaking of the servo/motor that caused the needle to bounce.  YMMV

I fixed it by disassembling the gauge and wrapping the needle servo/motor with electrical tape to the near by plastic.

kinda ghetto, but works.

I have that happen RARELY. The tach always seems to go back to normal next ride. In the 24K on my bike, I'd say it's maybe happened 3 or 4 times, randomly.

If it persists, try DarkStar's fix.

But, I hope it's normal on your next ride.

I'll take a lot at that issue.  On mine, it's happened ever since I owned the bike.  It just started to worry me the other day when it was holding on the same RPM, at TWO DIFFERENT rpms while riding the same speed. ???

Like I say, I'm used to mechanical tachs and they bounce a bit if they're not brand new.

Mechanical tachs and/or speedo's usually bounce because the cable needs to be greased.

Unless it happens to be one of the 1960's era Smiths clockwork tachs that were found on BSA, Norton and various other British bikes. They were unreadable out of gear or with the clutch pulled.
