Hey all...Ive been wanting to swap out the rear shock on my m900 for a while now and I think its about time.  I did a track day at mid ohio a week ago and almost ate it after the rear stepped out over a smallish bump.  The stock shock has around 20k on it, so its on its last leg.

Funds are tight being just out of college so Im probably limited to a shock swap as opposed to new.  I have a machine shop available to use so bushings and shims of sorts shouldnt be an issue.  I tried to search the forum but it looks as if not many are attempting a swap for whatever reasons. 

Ive got the stock sachs which is only compression adjustable:

Racetech suggests a 8.3 kg/mm for my 155 lb weight so most of the ducati sportbike shocks are within range of the spring rate I would be looking for.  Eyelet to eyelet measures 13 inches on my current shock so that would be another big limitation of shocks available.

Any suggestions on which shocks to modify that I could find for a decent price?  Really anything with less than 20k is probably going to be an improvement

I have a stock 848 shock.

The 848 shock won't work with the 01 M900. I had one (from a 1098) and I sold it to a friend to use on his M900 after finding that it wouldn't work on my old S2R1K. It mounts right up to the M900 but there isn't enough clearance for the swingarm.

Is it the width of the 848 shock that wouldnt clear the swingarm??  The bottom end of the 848 shock looks quite similar to the m900 shock so Im confused as to what part of the shock doesnt clear.  Is in the swingarm linkage at the top portion of the shock??

What about the 999 shock??

I'm pretty sure a rebuild is going to be the most cost-effective solution for you.

The RaceTech spring calculator for rear suspension on Ducs is FUBAR.
Please don't buy a spring based on what it recommends.

 It's the reservoir that doesn't clear. At first glance it doesn't look like it would be a problem but once it's installed it's a different story. I will say that it may be able to work if you changed out the spring to something other than the progressive one that comes stock. I'm only guessing because I haven't tried it.

 As far as the 999 shock, I know it will fit on an S2R/S4R because I had one on my S2R1K. I'm not sure about the M900 though.

The 999 shock also fits a 695 (once the vertical coil finds a new home and the crankcase breather canister falls off).

Yea I was thinking the reservoir was going to be the issue for clearance, but it does look as if you rotated the shock  backwards towards the engine, the only clearance issue would be with the crankcase breather which could easily be relocated or removed. 

Anyways, I got a great offer from a forum member for a low mileage 99 m900 shock, so hopefully that will work out! 

You should try and source an Ohlins from an "S" model M900.
