I was looking at Keira Knightley aboard a Ducati and found this video.
Truck fails to yield right away . Pretty brutal and not much in the way of protection for the rider either. No helmet.

yeowch... The old left turn. I'm surprised the dude is on his feet again that fast after taking that hit.
he's a football player. he probably gets hit just as hard in practice. His brain won't love him in a few years.
unbelievably lucky to be alive.
I think he had a helmet. It looks as though he came off when he crashed. Maybe he did not have it strapped properly. He lost a shoe too lol. Guy needs to learn how to tie stuff.

Again, football player. You're asking too much.

No helmet.
Happened about 20 miles from here, so it has been on the news non-stop.

Owwwww...
I'm guessing the driver of the truck may have had the sun in his eyes.
No helmet? Double owwww...
Looks like he is on a scooter so maybe he wasn't going that fast?
Dang...
FRACK!!! I bet that when he popped up that it was all adrenaline. Hopefully he wasn't hurt too badly. That looked awful.
....and people criticize me for riding with my high beam on during the day....
If it saves me from something like that I'll do it every time I ride!

Absolutely the wrong thing to do after hitting the concrete. Unfortunately we do not see the rest of the video. Hope he's OK. Intersections are the worst. I always slow down, cover the levers, and scan all vehicles. Head-on with an suv, surprised he didn't get run over.

Do a search for him - he has had all sorts of national TV interviews and I am sure medical scans. He is a starter for a big 10 top 10 football team - I am sure he has gotten a lot of attention us regulars wouldn't.
Basically it is proof every crash is slightly different, nothing is absolute, and I think he just won the lottery. A few inches a couple different directions and he is dead.

Why is it that in so many accidents (bikes, cars, boats, etc) people have their shoes fly off. And not just slip-on's, but sneakers, too. ???

The big difference is most people don't need ice cubes to turn theirs on. ;D

Always wondered about the same thing... It could be the centrifugal force that pulls your shoe off when you're spinning in the air...

Get a headlight modulator, they are 1000% better than just hi-beam

On my 03 620, I have the bright trigger, I often use it like a modulator when going through intersections with an oncoming lefty......I'm certain it's saved my ass a few times.

Driving my cage and seeing a headlight modulator makes me want to swerve right into the bike. I don't mind constant high beams, but the high frequency flashing makes me almost road rage. It really affects my eyes.
On my bike, I usually give a couple high beam flashes when approaching an intersection for a heads up. I don't think it affects other drivers like a modulator because it looks similar to just hitting a dip in the road and having the light beam hit your eye once or twice.

Thank God I've never seen you on the road... !
I usually get VERY good response from cars while riding. Very often ppl will change lanes to let me pass...
I'm with mitt.
I can't stand those make the beast with two backsing things.
I have to agree with mitt and Rameses, when I see a bike coming towards me with thier headlight flashing, it is extremely distracting. I understand the point of being seen, but the flashing really f's with my eyes. To the point of not loosing focus. Almost like I'm being drawn towards the light.

i think that's a symptom of tardive dyskensia.
the fact is, they make you HIGHLY visible because the light is moving. a moving light beats a bright light any day.
most people won't steer towards and kill a motorcyclist because of a pulsating headlight. those that do would probably do it anyway.
it makes you highly visible and that's probably #2 for bike safety, #1 being gear.

Be careful doing that. There are quite a few locations where a quick flash or two of the highbeam is a "go right on ahead" to other drivers.
That's true, it's pretty much universal for truckers

Very true, not so much in North America, but Europe and the UK, it means go ahead. I just leave my high beam on during the day, I'm a new street rider and that is one thing someone passed onto me at the MSF course. That plus a weave to the other part of the lane if possible usually gets people's attention.
On this particular incident, people day dream in their cars, I have had someone in a shopping lot turn in front of me(me in a car), no signal nothing on a two way lane!! The then girlfriend wanted to get go "get" him, I just shook my head!! Not worth it, too much to lose!
I fell compelled to point out that a flickering or pulsing light is nothing like a flashed headlight. No one who sees a modified bike light will assume it's a 'go ahead' indication.

Which is exactly why I quoted Mitt when he said that he is prone to giving his high-beam a couple of quick flashes when coming in to an intersection. See?
