Title: 696 reserve fuel indicator comes on prematurely
Post by: tuanogus on September 13, 2010, 03:40:29 PM
The reserve fuel indicator on my '09 696 has been coming on prematurely (about 40-60 miles early). And this weekend decided to stay on regardless of how much fuel in the tank. After the bike sits for a while it's okay for a few miles but, once the bike warms up, it flickers on/off a bit and finally stays lit.

Other than this I've no issues at all with the Digitek. Also just had my 7500 mile service done (this started shortly after getting the bike back).

Any thoughts on this? I instinctively want to start troubleshooting by locating a fuel sensor but am looking for insight before I get started.

And, yes, the bike is under warranty. But this is something I'll wait to get fixed over the winter. Just looking for an excuse to do a little DIY.

DIY is fine, but if it is the fuel level sensor the sensor is expensive and that is the most likely cause.  Make your next oil change or accessory DIY.

Thanks, howie. I'll just wait and have the shop take care of it sometime over the winter. Meanwhile, I've done a little DIY with black tape so I don't have to stare at that amber light.

The 696 fuel level indicator isn't available as a separate part.
The complete fuel pump/flange/filter/sensor assembly is quite expensive.
Don't let your warranty lapse before you get this fixed....

I haven't had one of the 696 units in my hands, but I suspect it's not 'repairable'.

Out of curiosity I went and looked up the parts diagram and, sure enough, it's a single unit. Well, one can buy the fuel filter separately. Looks like the fuel pump and sensor are part of a thinger called a 'flange'.

OEM catalog lists it at $1013.00 USD.

Yikes :o

Thanks for the heads-up guys.
