Okay- the big question is this: do I need new rearsets with clip-ons? I can't help but think that possibly I may enjoy my riding experience better with clip-ons rather than the riser bars. My ankles feel cramped when I ride long rides.

Also- on a somewhat related note: has anyone tried the rotating footpegs that monsterparts.com sells?

Clipons... rearsets.... their relationship to good ergonomics?  Where the farnarkle is stopintime when you need him?

I have clip ons with stock rearsets

Agreed, it works OK (but was not great, for me at least).

I ran my Cyclecat clipons with the stock rearsets for a season before changing them out for a set of Rizoma rearsets. I have found that having the pegs slightly higher and further back is a good match with the lower clipon bars. The stock pegs were a bit too far forward and low and with the lower bars I was doubled over at a kind of awkward angle. The Rizomas corrected that with the more aggressive riding position.

Whether you'll find the stock rearsets comfy with lower bars will probably depend on a number of things: how tall you are / how long your reach is / how low the clipons are / how long your legs are / how tolerant you are of pressure on your wrists / etc.

i have very aggressive clip ons with stock rear sets and I feel fine after a 2 hr spirited ride.

put on the clip ons and see how you feel. if you are on the tall side the extra room will likely be appreciated but still not necessary if you are shorter you may not like the layed out position that clip ons combined with rear sets give you.

Well,
clip ons will lean your upper body forward - which closes your hip joint angle.
It will put pressure on your lower back and reduce ability to control the bike with your core muscles.

Rearsets will put your feet back (if the peg in fact mounts rearward)(not all do).
This opens up your hip joint, but it also closes your ankle joint.

So, in theory - rearsets are required when switching to clip ons - for best result.
(how much better depends on legs/torso ratio)

In real life we're all quite different, so our experiences may vary. For example: you might gain a better over all position, but your ankle issues might kill the plan.

Quite a few guys tried rotating peg arms (MonsterParts). As I see it - at least an affordable way to find out what will work for you. Along with GillesTooling rearsets, they are the only option which will allow a lower peg, as well as rearward.
This might very well be the solution to your ankle issues, but then again - lowered pegs might drag - which may or may not be a problem for you.

So, I should probably purchase both the rotating footpegs AND the clip-ons at the same time. That would make sense. If worse comes to worse, I would only have to sell off the clip-ons if I hate them. Or, I could go with adjustable height clip-ons and that could make life a tiny bit easier whilst adjusting. I know I liked the riding position on my old 900ss, and didn't feel cramped in the least, nor did I feel hunched over or lying down. Something about the Monster makes me feel like I don't have enough weight over the front tyre...

The aftermarket rearsets are a bit on the spendy side for me right now.

This is what I have and it works well for me too.  I have above the triple clipons with the stock rearsets and find the combo to be comfortable.  I also find that the Terblanche designed SS to be not too extreme either.
