Title: Installed GIVI rack for top case ( key ? )
Post by: duk too on September 18, 2010, 04:13:21 AM
I have a GIVI rack installed and the mount for the rack will not allow access to the seat lock.
Key is too long.  :(
I can't even remove rack because GIVI arm is mounted under seat.
Dealer has ordered an extra key which I will have cut short, but I want to change body parts and access under seat asap.

Has anyone cut down a key and if so where is the chip located in the key?
I am considering cutting my spare key down prior to getting the third key from the dealer.
Is this a dumb idea? ???

What bike?

On the older style monsters the seat can be unlatch with out the key.  Look under, find the little bit of seat latch wire exposed, and pull.

Mine is a new 2010 M1100s ABS, so no pull cord for seat release is present.

i would go and find a decent locksmith

they will prob have a matching keyblank that they could cut a key for you

then cut down that key

what tail unit do you have installed?

each of them relocated the key to different areas.

the R&G sets it further into the center of the bike
the CW puts it under the tail
etc.

The tail tidy is Evo Tech. Key goes in on curbside. (right side)
I tried to find a locksmith that could do it here in Kitchener Ontario area.
Maybe I will try harder.
The key is a milled design and locksmith needs a milling machine key cutter. ???

that might be your issue.

if you had the stock tail or the DP short tail you might not have a problem with the key

a lot of accessories are design for the stock parts. ie i can't use the DP passenger grab rails with an R&G tail tidy due to turn signal positions.

Try to go back to stock tail for a test. Might be easier than trying to find a locksmith.

as far as getting it off now, can you take the lower half of the evo tech off to get at the seat release cable?

Removal of bottom Evo Tech is my next move.  [thumbsup]

BTW, Evo Tech tidy is a real quality piece. Way too much work to remove and install original. IMO

Removed tail tidy and accessed seat release. [clap]
A hassle but worth it to install carbon fibre tank pad and key surround motorcycle porn parts. [drool]

ok that's short term

long term you're still looking at a shorter key?

A key is on order.

Another way would be to disconnect cable for seat and feed it out incorporating a pull tab or loop. Cord would be hard to see and a key would not be required.
I have seen this done before. :-\
