A friend of mine recently picked up an '06 S2R-800 in black and tang. Nice looking bike.
She's titled it and nobody balked, so we're all assuming it's a square deal and the bike wasn't stolen at some point.
Anyway...
She has one black key, no red key, and didn't get the code card with the bike. I've done a brief search, but can't find anything that seems terribly helpful concerning this.
Can you make new black keys without the red one, or somehow do an end run around and make a new red key? I've never had to deal with an immobilizer...
I know you can nix the immobilizer with aftermarket ECUs, but she's looking for a less pricey option.
If the bike runs then she doesn't seem to need anything at all. Least expensive option at this point is to not lose the one key she has. I think the red key or keycard is used to make black keys but I'm not certain. I still have all my keys and the keycard.
I think otherwise she's in an expensive predicament. One should never buy an used immobilizer-equipped Ducati without the red key and keycard, unless the price is so right it's worth spending the money to correct it. I think she has to buy a new instrument cluster at the dealer which comes with the keys or spend the $275 or whatever to have the annoying immobilizer deactivated so she can make copies as she chooses with key blanks and not ever have to worry about it going haywire and stranding her. If it were me I'd probably just make sure I never lost the one black key I had in my possession because I'm lazy.
No FHE but word is some locksmiths can duplicate the black key with the proper code or whatever. Make a couple 'phone calls.
I bought my 2002 620 with only one black key.
Bought a key blank (Silca KW17T5) online and took it to a local locksmith who cut the key and copied the code using a key cloner (stick black key in, press button to read code, stick new key in, press button to write code) and they charged me $5 to do it.
From what I researched, you can NOT buy a Ducati key blank because they can't be written over correctly, it needs to be a key straight from the manufacturer (Silca).

well there ya go, I didn't know it was that easy
well if I had learned about de-immobilizing the ECU I would have a 749 dark right now instead of my 696.
Had a killer deal setup, then guy said no red key, i said no deal, cause all I had ever heard is thousand of dollars to fix the problem...
What Raux said...
Ride it, drive it. Maybe get the immobilizer removed via a tuned ECU, or get a locksmith to make you a spare key (They must have the ability to duplicate an immobilizer key).
Selling it....is going to be a whole other issue.
I would say to eventually get the ECU flashed to DP specs and have the immobilizer removed. The only thing to worry about without the code card is that if some dipshit decides to try and borrow the bike by, say, using a screwdriver for a key or something... that immobilizer is going to kick on. From what I understand, once that immobilizer kicks on, to get it back OFF, you need to insert the RED key, and then enter the code on the card by pressing the buttons on the gauge cluster. PITA.
hopefully it won't ever happen, but if it does, and the immobilizer is still active, it could be a problem...
someone correct me if i'm wrong please.
Or for a laugh your buddy puts his red key in your bike and switches it to ON. Then you have to go through the same immobilizer reset bullshit.
sounds like a bike I almost bought here in Ohio. The (non ducati) shop wanted to cut and glue something to the frame...blah-blah...They wouldn't come off their over retail price and ended up taking the bike to the auction. Long story short, the only true way (I was told by my duc shop) to get the red key is to start over...new ecu, key set, cluster and tank lock...@$800.00
The bike I was trying to get was repo'd from a guy in Cinncy...they did a title search and found the guy...he had the key still but he was still a bit salty about the repo and wouldn't sell it. You could try that route too...Find the original owner...its less than 800.00!
Guys I am confused and need some guidance please....I have a 09 1100s that I imported new from a Ducati dealer in Europe to Dubai.
The bike has come with 2 keys, both black, one is still attached to a code card and has a red sleeve. But I do not have a red key? So are the bikes meant to come with 3 keys?
My only concern with this is that I had a landcruiser pull out in front of me and the dash was one of the things torn off the bike...I have a new dash coming and been told it is easy to configure or synch the new dash to the immobiliser by turning the bike on and off in a particular sequence with both the black and red key.
What red key? any ideas or advice?
AFAIK, the 'red key' is only for the Magneti-Marelli ECU bikes, so M696 and M1100 are not at risk.

correct, both keys are the same. the code card is the important thing not to lose on the new bikes.
thanks guys appreciated.... cant say enough how much I enjoy this forum. Good people, nice bikes.
Raux, love your bike man...nice job !
