Title: Got my BoomTubes Series 2
Post by: ggemelos on September 18, 2010, 02:56:50 PM
Well I got my BoomTubes series 2 today and spent the last few hours installing them.  They look and sound great.  They come with a pretty decent amount of baffling so they are not too loud and definitely very deep sounding.  I think I am finally at a place in the modification process where I can be content to stop (famous last words)

  • BoomTubes series 2
  • Speedy Moto Clutch plate and cover
  • Corbin Seat with bolts for tying down luggage (nicely hidden under the cowl)
  • GSP mount
  • Puig windscreen
  • Rizoma Reverse Retro

OK, I guess there was one more final mod, I removed the frame stickers.  I actually thought of getting a new rearset, but I think enough money has been spent for now.  Maybe a new rearset down the road.  Any recommendations if I find that sometime down the road ends up being next week  ;D

As for the Corbin, I got it during a ride-in-session.  You get to talk with the guy making the seat and give feedback on how you want things changed from the standard template they have for your model bike.  The templates are made when the first customer with your bike comes in.  Whoever was their first M1100 customer must either lie really far back in their seat or have been 6'6".  The off-the-shelf seat they put on my bike was horrible.  It took a few rounds with the worker to get it just perfect.  They can pretty much change anything you want.  I then asked him to sink a few 5/16 bolts into the pillon seat so that I could put eye bolts in there for tying down luggage.  He said it was no problem and did not even charge me anything more for it.  The seat is great, but I would not order it unless you can do a ride-in-session.

wow, based on your use of the pillion seat, I can't see your hauling passengers.

you should go for any of the rearsets that take it down to a solo rider set.

Woodcraft
S&P
Rizoma
etc.

do a search in the Acc & Mod section and you'll see a ton.

The bolts come out and the pillon is still usable.  The nuts are in the seat pan and cannot be felt by someone sitting on the pillon.  Having said that, I have not intention of taking a pillon.

everytime i see a set of these on a bike, I can't wait for mine to get made even more.  I'm a few weeks out still, but they are definitely the best looking option by far.

seeing these made me want to part with the termi full system that's on my bike already even more

I will try to get a sound clip posted. Unfortunately, all I have that can be used as a recorder is my phone. I am not sure what kind of quality that will produce.

So I took the bike for my first ride with the new exhaust. Although it might just be in my head, the bike feels q lot smoother in the low range.

Here is the best I could do in terms of an audio clip.  I don't think my camera was able to capture a lot of the low frequency audio.  The exhausts has a much more deep sound than what is in the clip. They definitely are not as loud as people think they will be.  Mark ships them with a lot of baffling.  This might also address some of the back pressure issues some people are concerned about.  I would think with the amount of baffling in the pipes, there should not be any issue with lack of back pressure.  Of course, I am no expert of the issue.

You can hear some of the low tones sneaking past the clack clack of your clutch... but not much :p And those are nowhere near as loud as the baffle-less boomtubes of the past. I likey.

Title: Re: Got my BoomTubes Series 2
Post by: ggemelos on September 20, 2010, 12:47:04 PM
In person, the exhaust is louder than the clutch, but nearly as loud as the original BoomTubes I have heard in clips.  I think the recording device picked up the higher frequencies of the clutch noise better than the exhaust.  I tried to compensate by putting it closer to the exhaust output.  I guess my future as an audio engineer is limited.

If you prefer them louder, the baffles are easy to remove (a single screw).  Mark says they can be removed and drilled to any desired amount of baffling.  I have not tried running the bike without the baffles in. I am guessing it would be ridiculously loud.

the audio quality of your exhaust clip would be much better if you placed the camera 15-20 feet away from the bike itself in the direction that the exhaust is firing.

Bike looks great!

If you are on a budget, I would start saving for a new rear tire, it is looking pretty squared off!  Maybe a dual compound to get some more life out of it.

Cheers.

The rear tire is a casualty of a 4k road trip I took recently.  It was all back roads, but there is only so many twisties you can string together to cross five states in a reasonable period of time.  I already have my next set of tires picked out, Metzler Z6's.  I like the way they handle and I can get a few more miles out of them then the BT016's.

I told myself I was done with mods for now.  But after looking at those stock rearset for the past week, I broke down and ordered a pair of the Sato rearsets in black.  As I was ordering them, I told myself that is it for now  ;D  It should really clean up the back end.

How did you handle the removal of the O2 sensors though?

Be sure to post an update on the rear sets when you get them installed.  I am particularly interested in the ease of install and what the new foot position is like compared to stock.  Rearsets are my next upgrade and the only thing keeping me from pulling the trigger are these two concerns.

Thanks!

I picked up the Sato rearset the other day and spent last night installing them.  Although I cannot point to anything being particularly hard, it did take me a couple of hours to install them.  There was just a lot of little things that ended up taking more time than you would think.  One of the bolts for the left side did not line up and required a little filing, nothing to major.  The real time drain was fitting all the parts together, testing out the configuration, and then taking it apart to add the loctite.  In essence you almost have to assemble them twice. Still I prefer doing it myself than taking it to a shop.

Overall I am happy with the look of the Sato rearset.  They definitely cleaned up the looks of the bike and combined with the BoomTubes, they look great.  I have not had a chance to ride the bike yet or take pictures.  I will update when I shortly with pictures shortly.

Thanks for posting a clip!  I'm shocked they're not louder than that honestly.  How do they compare to non-baffled termis?  The termis are pleanty loud enough for me, and I freaking love the look of the boom tubes, but I can't let the bike be any louder than it already is given neighbors and all.  So, certainly louder than stock, but are they louder than non-dBkilled Termis?

Great stuff man!

I don't have a set to do a side-by-side comparison, but I am pretty sure that the fully baffled BoomTubes are quieter than then unbaffled Termis.

So here are some pictures.  I can now say with a decent amount of confidence that I am done with the modification game for now.  I cannot think of anything else I want to do to the bike.  Unless someone has a good suggestion  ;D

An Ohlins rear shock and OZ forged billet wheels did wonders for the handling when I made the changes to my M1100.

The installation wasn't too bad.  The hardest part was fitting the pipes together.  The joints are very tight and I needed to sandpaper down the ceramic coating to get them to fit.  Mark suggested this and it worked fine.  Although, it still took some time to get things together.  I ended up assembling everything off the bike first.  I then removed the front cylinder header from the collector (this took a lot of patients and strength) and put the exhaust on in two parts.  After this pre-assembly, the front header went on pretty smoothly.

A liberal application of graphite powder will also help tight pipes to slip together/come apart in the future.

Well done! Very clean setup!

A few questions if I may...

  • Any fuel modifications? PC3?
  • How's drivability?
  • Louder than the OEM exhaust?
  • You'd mentioned the O2 sensors are still there... I can't see them! Very well hidden I suppose.

As far as other mods... Maybe new frame plugs/cowl plugs?  ;D
