Title: What is "trim"
Post by: alibaba on September 19, 2010, 08:12:35 PM
Hoping one of the esteemed members can post a tutorial on what 'trim' is, the correct settings, how it is adjusted, etc.

trim is basically the bikes  mixture set through the computer

earlier ones are user adjustable with a screwdriver, later bikes are only adjustable through software

a good place to read http://www.bikeboy.org/ (http://www.bikeboy.org/)

Try a search on urban dictionary, but not if you are at work.  [evil]

An adjustment on the computer that changes injector pulse width (how long the injector is open), which affects how rich/lean the engine is running.  This affects mostly idle.  Off hand, I don't think you can do this on your 696.

So you think the adjustment of the trim affects the fuel delivery over the full rev range? I have a 998 where I recently took it to the dealer because it was stalling at idle. They increased the trim from 0 to 20 and now my mates say the bike is running way too rich as they can smell it while they ride behind me. After the trim was adjusted I pulled the plugs and found they were not screwed in tight and the plug caps connection was wrong (only the thread on the end and no button). This all started due to the bike being real hard to start cold (increased air gap) and I was running the battery flat just to get it to fire. I think I am going to contact the dealer to adjust the trim again.

No.  Reread what I wrote.  As engine speed and load goes up trim becomes less significant.  Are the riders behind you still complaining since you tightened the plugs and fixed the plug cap connections?  The riders behind you might have been smelling rich mixture on closed throttle.   Did they do trim with an exhaust gas analyzer?

Understand so what they are smelling is the over rich idle on roll off. The bike was tuned at a ducati dealer here in oz so what I think has happened is they tuned the trim to compensate the stalling and didn't care about the sniffer reading. Shows they didn't bother to check the plugs. Should have checked the plugs before hand which could have saved me some money.
