748/996/998 Axle vs. 749/999 Axle

What is the difference?
Clearly there is a difference on the 848/1098/1198 axle, but what's the difference between the 748/998 and the 749/999?
It would be "really" nice if I could just use this 749/999 axle with my 998 forks....
