Title: Re: Is his form OK on this turn? Post by: El Matador on September 24, 2010, 07:31:46 PM Damn, just damn. I mean that's got to be like a 55 degree lean angle he's got going on there.
Title: Re: Is his form OK on this turn? Post by: The Bearded Duc on September 24, 2010, 07:37:22 PM He looks unbelievably relaxed to me.
I've never been on a track though. That lean is damn near crazy!! Title: Re: Is his form OK on this turn? Post by: stopintime on September 24, 2010, 09:22:39 PM That's not possible [leo] I can prove it >:(
No, seriously, I've seen racers do that on a regular basis. Impressive [thumbsup] AFAIK - that's only possible because the tires bend/twist a little under pressure. Form OK? Maybe a knee down on those curbs spell t-t-t-t-r-r-r-ouble ? More elbow/head/ass instead? Title: Re: Is his form OK on this turn? Post by: MadDuck on September 24, 2010, 09:45:40 PM Carlos Checha? I think he knows something about cornering.
Title: Re: Is his form OK on this turn? Post by: herm on September 25, 2010, 01:14:00 AM its ok as long as the rear sprocket doesn't drag...

Title: Re: Is his form OK on this turn? Post by: derby on September 25, 2010, 04:35:48 PM it's really just an optical illusion caused by the camera at an odd angle and raised curbing. look at how far his footpeg is from the track.

Title: Re: Is his form OK on this turn? Post by: zooom on September 26, 2010, 02:29:19 AM that is the tires for GP (and maybe WSBK as well) are made with such distinct V shaped profiles that they are optimized for traction contact patch while leaned over moreso than straight up and down...

Title: Re: Is his form OK on this turn? Post by: Cider on September 27, 2010, 11:08:32 AM Even the "local" (closest track is 5.5 hours away) club racers are getting some ridiculous lean angle these days:

Post by: Cider on September 27, 2010, 03:35:32 PM no kidding! but apparently that guy gets some $ from Bud Light Lime. or he just really really likes the stuff. He got some money from the local distributor. There was a short write-up on him in the last Roadracing World magazine (Dave Lewis). pretty much. but he did ask. :) You don't need an excuse to post a cool picture like that. Nice shot! Title: Re: Is his form OK on this turn? Post by: fasterblkduc on September 30, 2010, 03:36:48 AM Here are a couple pics of CRA Novice racers this year. These are on flat corners. It's become a game for people to drag elbows now.
The first pic is of a kid who was a student of mine last year...now he's kicking butt racing. Title: Re: Is his form OK on this turn? Post by: fasterblkduc on October 02, 2010, 06:43:28 AM how does that even work? i guess tis 99% throttle control? If you're asking about the pics that I posted, it's all about tire grip. In the first pic, they are carrying right at 100 mph. through that turn on MWs. (I've looked at my speedo on my cbr and it indicated higher, so the actual should be approx. 100) The big bikes carry even more. You are hard on the gas because this turn goes into the straight and you want to get a strong drive out. This is incredibly grippy pavement here and people are getting rediculous lean angles in this section of the track. My teammate crashed his SV in this corner last weekend because he finally pushed the traction boundary too far...probably due to a tire that was losing grip, and he was starting to get obscene with his leaning. But to answer your question...it's not a wide corner and you have to apex it just right or you will run off the outside. Radius of the turn = mph, and you use lean angle to set your radius. In a turn like this, you need a tight radius because of the turn being narrow, and at the same time, you are going fast to get the drive onto the straight. So, you have to lean far to tighten that radius. This is why you lean over so far in this turn. How you attain so much lean and speed in this turn is due to race tires and nice new grippy pavement. I love this turn. The second pic is a fairly slow carousel that is gigantic. It's not high speed because at the end it dumps into a chicane so you actually scrub off speed in the last part of this turn. Again, it's really grippy pavement and here you are going maybe 60? (I've never looked at a speedo here) Lots of people are now dragging elbow through here and it's totally flat. You just go to a maintenance throttle and hold your rpms, hang off, and lean hard. Everyone is doing it just for fun. Title: Re: Is his form OK on this turn? Post by: fasterblkduc on October 02, 2010, 07:02:02 AM I'll throw another pic up just for fun. Same corner but you should see the speed that this guy takes this corner. He set the new lap record on the day this pic was taken. He passed me going into this turn like I was standing still. :o (for reference, I'm not exactly slow here) His name is Tony Kasper, former Canadian Superbike pro.

Post by: fasterblkduc on October 02, 2010, 07:41:03 AM ...and confidence in the front end. ;D yup ;) Ok, I lied, I just looked for pics of me in the same turn and found one that I'll post. (I think I'll buy this pic now.) This is about my average lean angle in this turn. I've never pushed it that hard like Jonny in pic 1.
