Sometime in the next week we will be doing some maintenance that may put the forum out of commission for a short spell.
Please be advised....the sky is not falling...and we haven't sold out to VS.
Tinfoil hats may be left in storage. ;D

...are we there yet? ;D
We're dealing with electricity and computers and stuff...some of which I'm dangerous with. You're all very lucky I'm not actually doing the work.
[I hope the smoke doesn't get out. :P]
I'm guessing hours...maybe.
no letting the magic smoke outta da box!
Go for it Nate but be quick, I don't want to get cold turkey.. ;) ;)
[coffee]
ahh...so I see...he is breeding the turkey to go into the magic box full of smoke for to have a tasty turkey for Thanksgiving...
Why don't you guys just do this at my house, somehow that should make things go faster.
I start getting real worried when someone tells me to put my tinfoil hat away...

A little reverse psychology...well played my friend.
You know for what we pay to have this forum we really shouldn't have to deal with outages
:o

I know...
it's unacceptable.
You guys should sell out to VS every couple of years. In another year or so all the VS employees and management that were involved in the first buy out will be gone. There will be no corporate knowledge of their previous mistake. The founders of this board could ride off into the sunset with saddle bags full of money and then another group of forum members could start Monster Forum ver. 3.0
A little update for the conspiracy theorists. ;D.
The maintenance will take place tonight (Cali night) and the board will be down for about an hour.
We're pretty sure the results will be well worth our effort and your inconvenience.
Hints? What's to come?

Nothing that you'll see. The forum will look like it does right now.
We're migrating to a new, much more powerful server at a new host.
There should be a noticeable improvement in forum speed at busy times, and the elimination of the annoying error messages that SMF can't communicate with the database.
I couldn't post tonight between 5 and 6:30. [bang] [bang] [bang]
We'll also be running our own mail server so notification mails shouldn't be blocked as spam. That has been a real problem in Australia. That one is tough because ISPs have somewhat strange criteria for what is spam. Some will block a server just based on configuration. At least now as the mail server owner we can contact them and explain what is what and maybe get on a whitelist. Our mail was previously handled by relay servers owned by our host and the level of service from them made me want to murder someone.
All you guys should tip your hats to darylbowden. He has worked tirelessly on our server since the beginning, whether he was active as a member here or not, and frankly we'd be effed without him.
I'm not sure if people understand the work that goes on behind the scenes, but I can assure you lots of hours are spent keeping our little corner of the web chugging along.
