Title: Post GP ride
Post by: techno on September 29, 2010, 01:31:34 AM
As discussed in another thread, I am bringing my bike over for the MotoGP. I'll be staying at PI on the sunday night and don't have to be back in Melb until about 5 or 6 PM to catch the barge back to Tas. That means I have most of Monday to do some exploring.

I have not been to eastern Victoria before so I am after some ride suggestions from locals.

Looking at the map there seems to be some bloody great mountains which means the roads go around it. I don't think I have time to head east, up the great alpine road to Wangaratta and back to Melb again. While I have most of the day I do want to stop and take in some of the sights rather than riding all day just to make it back on time.

If the weather is anything like Tassie it will mean there is still likely to be snow as well.

I will probably have a couple of mates in tow on a Supersport and a (cough) VFR.

So, any good suggestions for a course starting from PI and ending in Port Melb?

I'm not a Melbournite but can I recommend the Reefton Spur, take the Wharburton Hwy out of Melbourne and you end up in Marysville, must rank up as one of the best motorcycling roads in Australia. Hardest part was finding the Wharburton Hwy and getting out of the burbs. Anyway, not being a local, I stand to be corrected and would love to know if there's any better roads in the area.

Might I suggest spend some time reading about riding in Vic-bloody-toria on www.netrder.net.au (http://)
Reefton Spur, Black Spur and quite a few other great riding roads are being hammered by over zealous cops
to the point of Harassment and intimidation.

And talking to a lot of Motorcycling friends back up in Cairns (northern Qld) it would appear that one of the
great Motorcycling roads up there is about to be lost thanks to the Fun Police, The Gillies range is about
to be dropped to 60k's all the way through, with a new dedicated taskforce of Police to patrol it to
ensure compliance with the new rules.

Personally I hate Victoria, I had the misfortune of driving through it recently with my move to Tassie, I hated
every second of it, constantly watching the Speedo, Paranoid of every overpass and intersection for Speed cameras.
trying to keep an ear out for the Nav system for directions in between the incessant beeping for Speed Camera
warnings... Sorry, "Safety Camera warnings"  [roll]

No Disrespect to the fine bunch of Victorians on this Forum, but your State really is going to the Dogs!

Techno I would give the spurs a miss as it will be peak hour on them with all the other bike riders.  If Ungeheur or G are free I would suggest a lap around west Gippsland.  Don't know if G still drops in here but I have his contact details if you want them.

Yup - great riding, but everybody esle - including  [leo] - will have the same idea.

Not sure if I'll be available on that Monday, but if I can get out of work I can show ya around some great - yet less frequented  ;) - riding roads all within an hour (or so) of PI.  PM me when we get closer coz even if I cant make it, I'll be able to suggest some nice riding for ya  [moto] [thumbsup]

Thanks for the tips. I have never ridden the spurs but will avoid them if they are going to be crowded with thousands of other riders on their way home as well as the plod trying to meet their quotas.

Unge, I am interested in those quiet alternative roads. PM me if you'd prefer to keep them a secret.  [moto]

Hi all,

I've been getting out a bit recently with koko64 for a ride every second Monday and guess what, the next one is the day after the moto GP.  I have to work in the arvo so will only be around in the morning but if you're heading up this way through the outer north east suburbs I'd love to catch up.

Cheers.
