2005 Monster S4R, Marvin mid pipe, Akrapovic slip on.  Power commander, internet map.
(Yesterday) I was traveling down the freeway (65-80 mph, i'm not sure), when an random altercation with a fellow on a Harley made me wanna book it... Didn't realize I was already in a lower gear than normal, downshifted a few times (I can't tell you exactly how many) Let the clutch go, and hit the rev limiter a few times before while I freaked out and pulled in the clutch and popped it into a higher gear.
Immediate symptoms: The tachometer stopped reading right. I pulled off the road to make sure everything was good, and noticed when it was idling before I shut it off the tachometer needle was at 0rpm, vs my normal 11-1200ish rpms. Started to freak out a bit more.
Turned the motor off, visually inspected the bike to make sure everything was ok from an exterior stand point.  Turned the key, and instead of the needles doing their full sweep, they stopped about halfway. I turned the key off then on again, and they fully swept, I started the bike, and the idle rpm was back to normal.
I drove home, power seemed to still be there, but whenever I passed someone on the left (AKA object or car on my right) I can now here a "pft" noise along with the typical exhaust tone. It sounds to me like an exhaust leak.  Today when rode the bike the noise was still there. I know for a fact a get paranoid and hear stuff when I get freaked out I broke something that I had probably ignored before, but this has me worried. I noticed a small exhaust leak where my midpipe meets the S pipe that connects to the muffler, but I'm afraid I screwed up a valve or something.
The bike runs fine, the sound bothers me tho. I'm all freaked out, did I really mess up?
Thanks guys/gals.

If it runs fine I'd say you're fine.  I hear random "new" noises every time I change the oil.

An easy fix is to take 1 bottle of Whiskey a small glass and some crushed ice.
Pour a generous amount of whiskey into glass and add a little ice.
Sit or stand while drinking the fine liquid.
After several of these the problem will be fixed.
(you'll be too drunk to even think about it)

I'd say you are probably over-reacting. The rev limiter is there for a reason.

With desmodromic valves the chance of doing damage due to over revving is greatly reduced due to the inability of the valves to float. If the bike is running well, I wouldn't worry.

Ok. Really embarrassed. I took my bike over to my buddies... he rode it around and agreed it sounded like an exhaust leak. He hoped off my bike, and pointed out the little allen bolt that goes in the Marvin mid pipe about halfway downstream had wiggled its way out. Lol.
Anyone have specs and that stupid bolt.

				specs - tight
bolt - Ace Hardware

[laugh] Cool, I'd take a little embarrassment over an expensive fix any day  [thumbsup]

Agreed...
and the fact that the same basic crank is used in motors that can safely rev to 12K+ would suggest it would be difficult to damage it with one incident.

Dont run from the Harley guys next time.  Unless they're lookin to make you their pregnant dog.

 [laugh] [laugh] Timeless quote!
One a constructive note, we'll not talk about the things I've done to my M750 and it still runs like a champ.

i think there prob wont be any problems
but
rev limit stops the igintion allowing the bike to over rev while accelerating
but if you are riding along and go down too many gears and pop the clutch the motor
will match the revs and that can be way higher than the rev limiter
nissan GTR's for example have been know to spit out rods from the block from the above and
going past 10,000 rpm

you'll never have cooler BeDazzled chaps than a harley guy, so it's not worth fighting over.

Did the tach start reading properly again?

...they fully swept, I started the bike, and the idle rpm was back to normal.
I assumed he meant the tach was working fine by that line.
I could be errant in that assumption though.

Or I could have totally missed reading that.  I know which I think is more probable ;)  Thanks.

sounds like a goofy gauge issue...
i noticed while riding a few months ago that for some reason my tach was reading wierd, and my speedo said 140... which was clearly off... as i was doing about 40mph.
for some reason, the speedo was zeroing at 100mph... wierd.
i shut the bike off, gave the gauges a swift punch in the nuts, and bam! all was well again.

I'm gonna assume that your bike info is wrong and that you actually own a Capirex 620.

You ran from a guy on a Harley??  We will have to revoke your ducati badge for that one sir.......

We don't need no stinking badges! (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=VqomZQMZQCQ#normal)

The car this came out of has a Rev limiter.

Damn!! Did this person "upshift" into 1st from 4th or something. That level of damage requires some serious violence.

Went from 5th to 1st or hit R for race. I do know he was high at the time.

I've often wondered what the rev limit is on the M750, usually after I zing it up to 9k on a false neutral.  The rev limiter for the 750, of course, is when the engine blows.

9K is red line, but it would take a lot more than that to break a 750.

My boss' son blew the timing belt, mashed every valve, and did other assorted damage downshifting his dad's BMW.  To quote my boss, "I'm going to pick up my car as soon as they find an adding machine big enough to figure the bill with."
