Title: How do you get past the new bike blues? Post by: Artful on October 04, 2010, 01:16:00 PM I absolutely beyond a shadow of a doubt love my bike. It is exactly what I want it to be, or can be there with a few extra mods.
But every six months or so my eye starts to wander. The Street Triple R comes out and has fully adjustable suspension. There is a Sport 1000 for sale for less than I paid for my Monster new. It never fails that my mind starts running numbers on how I can make it work. The problem is I CAN make it work. I make ok money and could feasibly have anything less than $12k that struck my fancy. Especially with a 695 that I could probably get $4k+ for if I was so inclined. But I definitely shouldn't make it work. My bike is paid off come March. I have a house that needs some updating. I have a girlfriend I am intending to ruin everything with and marry as long as she keeps putting up with my shit. I have the old VW in my avatar that is begging me to toss the motor I have waiting for it in over the winter which invariably comes with unforeseen bills. So, there really is no way I'm going to buy a new bike in the coming year or two. I have the restraint needed to not make a kneejerk purchase of that magnitude. I'm sure this isn't an isolated problem though and I'm sure y'all face it constantly as well. How do you deal with the new bike blues when you know you aren't getting anything new anytime soon? Title: Re: How do you get past the new bike blues? Post by: KRJ on October 04, 2010, 01:39:51 PM Just buy the damn thing and quit crying! ;D Title: Re: How do you get past the new bike blues? Post by: Artful on October 04, 2010, 01:44:18 PM Just buy the damn thing and quit crying! ;D That's the thing, I don't wanna :D I like the Monster's looks much more than the STR, and the Sport 1000 is a torture rack for the riding I do. That's another part of the equation. I don't want another bike, but I still think about getting other bikes. Yeah, I'm make the beast with two backsed in the head. I can show you a girl that can write a book on the matter. Title: Re: How do you get past the new bike blues? Post by: kopfjÀger on October 04, 2010, 01:47:25 PM Just start modding the make the beast with two backs out of the bike you have now. It will keep you busy for as long as you want.
Title: Re: How do you get past the new bike blues? Post by: Artful on October 04, 2010, 01:49:41 PM Oh trust me, I've got new shiny bits on the way. I'm clicking the tracking number like a heroin addict on the methadone button. Little known fact, that makes it arrive faster.
This isn't aimed at a thread centered around me, I know how I deal with it (riding the piss out of it and making subtle spaced out changes). I'm curious what other people's "coping mechanisms" are. Title: Re: How do you get past the new bike blues? Post by: Raux on October 04, 2010, 01:52:08 PM well... think of the bike as your girl.
i'll leave it up to you how you want to address that Title: Re: How do you get past the new bike blues? Post by: Artful on October 04, 2010, 02:01:52 PM well... think of the bike as your girl. i'll leave it up to you how you want to address that So what you're telling me is this: 1. It's better than the other motorcycles I've ridden in every way imaginable, yet still manages to drive me batshit 2. It still will take a lot of talking to get it to do that thing I like 3. If I put it away hot it tends to get a little fouled up 4. If I ride other bikes it will find new and exciting ways to kill me 5. If I don't buy it new stuff every now and then I won't get to ride it as much 6. It's cheaper in the long run to maintain the current one than go out looking for a new one, no matter how much fun the short term riding would be 7. Whenever I start to think I'm smarter than the bike it finds new ways to completely dumbfound me with illogical problems 8. I should always take it easy immediately after installing fresh rubber 9. I'm not going to find a better bike, but damn if that's going to keep me from looking every now and then 10. It gets pissed when I hit it with a wrench It's all so much clearer now, thanks! ;D Title: Re: How do you get past the new bike blues? Post by: muskrat on October 04, 2010, 02:02:31 PM get'em all. life sucks without having different rides (sub at your discretion [evil])

I saw that. Title: Re: How do you get past the new bike blues? Post by: junior varsity on October 04, 2010, 03:40:34 PM that triple's suspension sucks imo - i took a 40min demo and was glad to get off of it. be glad you didn't get it.
Title: Re: How do you get past the new bike blues? Post by: Veloce-Fino on October 04, 2010, 03:48:03 PM Just buy this and get it over with.

[laugh] [laugh] [laugh] [laugh] Title: Re: How do you get past the new bike blues? Post by: junior varsity on October 04, 2010, 06:03:56 PM yeah, but the susp on a duc isn't setup for a normal sized american either, but i flog the H796 and SF-S around and it feels vastly superior in damping
Title: Re: How do you get past the new bike blues? Post by: muskrat on October 04, 2010, 06:08:58 PM don't worry, I'm way past their "ideal" rider anyway. I liked it but I prefer my S4R a thousand times over. The SF is another story.
Title: Re: How do you get past the new bike blues? Post by: junior varsity on October 04, 2010, 06:11:59 PM The SF would be more fun if it turned in a bit quicker, like a true naked superbike, but local dfw'er VT's SF-S with full system and carbon air intakes is a BEAST
Title: Re: How do you get past the new bike blues? Post by: DRKWNG on October 04, 2010, 06:35:59 PM The SF would be more fun if it turned in a bit quicker Why I like this so much. Post by: junior varsity on October 04, 2010, 06:38:24 PM i've ridden the 990. thought it was nice, but it certainly has differences between it and the SF. I needed to be less snatchy/grabby at the on-off, but it may have been a simple fix like adjusting a throttle cable
Title: Re: How do you get past the new bike blues? Post by: DRKWNG on October 04, 2010, 06:40:44 PM There are several things it needs to get the fueling completely sorted out, that much is true. But the beauty is that the bike just begs to be flogged. Keep the tach up about 5k and the thing just crushes!! Turns in a hell of a lot quicker than the SF as well. [thumbsup]
Title: Re: How do you get past the new bike blues? Post by: junior varsity on October 04, 2010, 07:01:51 PM Yeah, I'd like the twitchier feeling of the SBK's shorter swingarm. its a bit slow into a turn.
Title: Re: How do you get past the new bike blues? Post by: Popeye the Sailor on October 04, 2010, 07:18:05 PM You're looking at it all wrong. You're looking at shiny. Try looking at things that are way cheaper but more fun. Like, a husaberg-I've seen them for $2k or so.
The one I was looking at was something like 50+ HP and 240 lbs. That's a boatload of fun, and you can just turn around and sell it. Also, it'll get future wifey used to the thought of you having two bikes, not one. Title: Re: How do you get past the new bike blues? Post by: 671M900 on October 04, 2010, 08:53:11 PM Agree with finding a smaller bike to put put around in, maybe get your other half into riding as well?
Or you could donate a chunk of your change, maybe to some motorcycle related charity? Makes you feel better too! Title: Re: How do you get past the new bike blues? Post by: zooom on October 05, 2010, 03:31:07 AM I can completely sympathize with you Artful...
I covet a replacement for my Gran Canyon everyday....not because I need it or anything like that...but simply because I want...I can not in any way justify it...but I can admit my yearning lust for a new steed in the stable... Title: Re: How do you get past the new bike blues? Post by: 77south on October 05, 2010, 04:47:35 AM Blow the money on a nice vacation. I get myself into the same situation with some regularity. I keep buying stuff with my spare cash and as a result I haven't had a decent vacation in years. On the other hand I really do like my Sport 1000s, even if it does whisper to me all of time about how it needs mods.
Title: Re: How do you get past the new bike blues? Post by: The Mad King Pepe' on October 05, 2010, 11:52:10 AM Move into a condo with little to no parking space.
If I had a garage I would spend my time picking up cheap bikes off craigslist/eBay/wherever and playing with them. I would get fired, my wife would divorce me, my friends would eventually forget about me. But I would be happy in there playing with my toys, kinda like a kid who has just discovered internet pr0n and masturbation. [laugh] Title: Re: How do you get past the new bike blues? Post by: Speedbag on October 05, 2010, 01:40:54 PM I'd buy another bike.
Life's too short, you really can't have too many, and, as said elsewhere, the wife-to-be will be used to there being a surplus of bikes prior to 'The End Of Happy Days'. Which helps get bike #3....and so on. Title: Re: How do you get past the new bike blues? Post by: Triple J on October 05, 2010, 02:17:56 PM Just buy the new one. You want it so quit being so damn responsible. [evil]
The reason I say this is because it will establish a pattern of you needing to rotate motorcycles every so often for no apparent reason to your girlfriend. It is crucial to establish this pattern pre-marriage, as it may become very difficult to establish post-marriage (since you're apparently thinking of marriage for some strange reason). Think of the new bike(s) not as a new bike(s), but as a long term investment in your motorcycling happiness. ;D (kinda like what Mr.I said...punk got to it before me) [cheeky] Title: Re: How do you get past the new bike blues? Post by: DRKWNG on October 05, 2010, 02:22:40 PM my friends would eventually forget about me. You're silly. We would be in that garage with you. ;D Title: Re: How do you get past the new bike blues? Post by: zooom on October 05, 2010, 02:43:19 PM Just buy the new one. You want it so quit being so damn responsible. well...eventually I will... damn you KTM for making a great machine and releasing it here whilst I have a perfectly functional decent one already, despite it's shortcomings that I little by little keep throwing money/parts at. |
