Title: M1100 small oil leak
Post by: ungeheuer on October 06, 2010, 02:23:55 AM
G'Day Ducatters  :)

Not sure.  I noticed a very small oil weepage from the bottom of the seal between the crankcase halves - its really very minor.....  But since the bike is still under warranty I wonder if I should take it for em to take a look..... although I'm reluctant to allow em to split the crankcases for such a small problem.

Am I inviting further problems by ignoring this tiniest of leaks?  (Even calling it a "leak" is overstating the magnitude of the....um... leak).

Are you sure it's from between the cases, not from the oil filter or somewhere else?
I've heard suggestions to clean everything well, then spray with foot powder from a spray can, to identify the exact source.

I'm saying this because I've seen oil from my leaking crank case breather valve, on my tank. At speed everything moves in mysterious ways.

Bring it in.  If it is leaking from the case halves you can decide whether to repair or not.  Finding the source of the leak first would be a good idea.

it's because you have the WASP works on there... it's karma  [evil] for not buying everyone on the board living in kaiserslautern germany a set

I'm..... pretty sure its coming from the crankcase join.  Definately not the filter - that was my first hope.  I'll have a real good clean tomorrow before my ride and.... check again.

I know.  If it never gets any worse, then I'm doubting its worth the major tear-down....

Pretty sure its coming from the crankcase join.  Be nice to be wrong though.

Sometimes the case-bolt tightening person at Ducati gets a little weak, maybe too much [wine] going on.

Try snugging up those bolts along the bottom of the case.

Ha!  I was wrong  :D.  Quite pleased about that.....  discovered today (after stopintime made me stopandthink) that the weepage is coming from the crankcase breather......  too tired to check it out tonight after riding all day.....  but I cant imagine its a difficult fix.  Bike's only 1500Kms away from its 12K service... so maybe I'll have 'em sort it then - since its still under warranty - although I'm not sure what my Duc Dealer's attitude is to mods voiding warranties....  (the crankcase breather is now no longer hooked into the airbox.....  it has a wee K+N filter all of its own since the airbox is... um... not there anymore).

So have you attempted to fix your leaking crankcase breather?

Not this year, maybe this winter  [roll] ;D
I've bought a new STM breather and a new gasket for it.

That is my goal, to be more relaxed and enjoy the ride (so to speak). At my last moment I want to smile, take a deep breath and say "that was a nice ride".

Oil leak fixed.  It was the crankcase breather.  Removed, cleaned, refitted and sealed with...um.... the appropriate gloop.

Cool  [thumbsup]

Now I must take another look at mine...

....... and then think again about when to change it...

If this was the case - snug the M6 bolts that go down the sump joining the two halves to a 10.5-18Nm range? The M900 fixxer upper has a slight dampness about the bottom of the crankcases - not a drip by any means.

Service manuals generally show M6 bolts at 10 N-m.

I triple checked the drain plug (new billet external hex from Nirvana iirc - crush washer to seal) and it is not leaking and torqued properly, and neither is the oil filter. Bike hasn't run since I did the oil change, so its not travelling down from crankcase breather, inside clutch housing (no clutch in bike currently), oil fill plug or oil pressure sender.

Its only damp though - no puddle on floor, but when you wipe your hand on case, you can get a light amount of "slippery" between fingers.

Check bolt torque and then perhaps smear silicone over junction as extra precaution?
(Unrelated but related: I do have a an oil catching DP carbon belly pan that this thing will be wearing on [at least] its first run as insurance against it shitting the bed and sending me careening off into the Texas countryside. I don't need a big oil slick to help me get there, I can do it all on my own, thankyouverymuch.)

Your description describes exactly the degree of oil leakage I was getting (and weirdly still occasionally do get - not every time the bike is run.... only... sometimes).

the small oil leak on my 1100 turned out to be a faulty base gasket on the rear cylinder. if it's under warranty i'd say just bring it in and let them fix it. most oil leaks only get worse over time, so you don't want to wait until it's out of warranty. the tech at my dealer said he's seen this happen a few times with the DS motors.
